Noisy air pump

In another post I queried a whining noise from the engine. I have now found it to be coming from the air pump as the noise goes when I disconnect the electrical connection to it.
From what I have researched, it seems the unit is activated during warm up to reduce emissions.
I have two questions:-
1. Is any harm done to the car if I disconnect the unit?
2. Can the unit be 'serviced' in any way?
Thanks in advance

UH, IF IT STOPS WHINNING WHEN HOOKED UP YOU NEED TO REPLACE IT, THATS HOW I TELL IF THEYRE WORKING, START THE CAR AND LISTEN FOR THE WHINE. AND YES YOU NEED IT, AND YES YOULL SET A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WITHOUT IT OR IF LEFT UNPLUGGED, AND NO YOU CANT SERVICE IT, BUT YOU CAN BREAK OPEN THE PLASTIC HOUSING AND LOOK INSIDE BEFORE YOU THROW IT AWAY
