Default OBD scanner for ‘96 DD6

Hello,

Does anyone have experience with an OBD scanning tool that is suitable for a 1995 Daimler Double Six?. I’d like to be able to diagnose and trouble shoot myself.

Thanks, Olav

I have a generic ELM327 that has no problem connecting to my North America Spec X305. Only useful if you have a smartphone, obvs.

My super cheap ELM dongle does have a problem, actually. It lights up whenever it's plugged into the DLC, which I guess means it's drawing its power from the B+ pin 16 rather than the switched pin 9.

I guess re-pinning the DLC isn't out of the question, especially since smog check on a '95 is tailpipe/visual only here, but before I do that, can anyone recommend a Bluetooth OBDII dongle that will go to sleep when it should?

I use the cheap Chinese 3 euros ELM327 too in my Daimler Double Six Century from 1996 and it works perfectly with my smartphone.
Normally I leave it connected and it blinks, but no problems.

So theres no problem pulling codes, just a problem that it's not going to sleep?

All of my OBD2 readers on the car do that, even a Jaguar dedicated one. (Genrad 500) None of them go to sleep, so they probably all pull power from the same pin. You can always make an extension cord for the OBD2 and swap pins?

This is disappointing to read. I'm used to the Scangauge II in my Miata that, correctly IMO, goes to sleep with ignition off.

Good idea to modify an extension rather than the car.

The cheapest OBDII extension on eBay turned out to be a wye. This turned out great -- on one of the sockets, I removed pin 16 and put line 9 in its place. Now the ELM327's power is switched.

The other socket on the extension, which I did not modify, fit almost perfectly in the car's DLC bracket, just a little loosely which I could shim if I cared. The ELM and the extra wiring got shoved away into the console's recesses, and I still have an unencumbered DLC in the factory spot.
