Jaguar specifically cautions against any and all additives for good reason. There's no evidence that sludge builds up in this engine if maintained even half decently.

Rislone is an artifact from the 50s, where it probably belongs.

If you want to get up to say 20K changes, start learning
about bypass filtration. Should be not that difficult to
install in the X300 engine bay. Nightmare on the X308
engine bay.

 

Already completed the oil filter cut away over a year ago & have attached pictures & article I wrote for the local jaguar magazine. (Remember I am in Australia)

Thanks John, based on your investigation it's clear and no surprise that Jaguar uses different styles and probably manufacturers of filters over time and perhaps regionally.

I have an OEM Jaguar EBC9658 that looks much different than yours when looking inside the filter.

I may cut it open today and take a look just out of curiosity.

Heh, I don't think I'd want to push the envelope that far for OCI The minor cost of oil, filter and labor at that high an OCI becomes irrelevant unless one somehow drives 5-10k miles a month or something... but if so I bet there are a lot of other significant operations and maintenance costs that are much higher too!

Now that being said, I wish there were a filter relocation kit that was a known bolt-on and reliable fit for the XJR6 since the filter on the XJR6 is a bit tough(er) to get to. I saw a kit here I think, but if I recall it isn't available anymore or just didn't seem to have much info on long term reliability. There are several universal kits which probably would work with some additional research that I admittedly haven't put the time into

Thanks for all the contributions guys but after reading through, I feel no more enlightened. I've always faithfully performed an 8000km-5000ml oil and filter change along with transmission fluid drain and refill. Using Penrite 20w-60 mineral oil, Penrite DX-III Transmission fluid and Ryco Z133 filter. I think I heard these specs from mechanics and (jag) people after I first purchased my 95 3.2 x300 and have followed the regime diligently. I'm just preparing to do the next 8000k service and thought id look up the actually documented OCI. As mentioned here it says 16000km or 10000ml. I'm sure I won't find many who will tell me,over-servicing my ride is detrimental to the engine but wanted to find out if I'm just creating extra work and expense for myself with my real gain.

 

Some of you are missing a crucial
point that was stated in the first post .

The poster said he would be changing oil almost monthly , which is a pain in the ****.

every opinion in this thread is almost irrelevant unless it’s “ do analysis “ and monitor.

only the lab can answer weather his driving , oil manufacturer and filter quality is up to the task.

I do 60,000kms a year in my Landcruiser. I replace oil at 20,000km per change with filters at 10k with analysis. We’re at 525,000km on the original engine and turbo . I get a lot of the rhetoric of “ you must get the oil my grandma used and religiously change it every 5000km”

but cost aside it’s simply not practical.

another consideration to this topic is the use of a commercial fine micron bypass filtering . These systems often improve the analysis results of heavy Diesel engines running up to 50 or 60,000 on an oil fil . Clearly a maintenance regime of testing and filters is needed for this type of OCI

to the OP use the best quality synthetics and filters you can , perform a baseline out of the bottle analysis, then again at the recommendation, do a filter and do analysis every 1000 miles and build up a history.

some commitment is needed to this approach.

More typically oil testing reveals other unrelated issues that can be solved preventing more costly maintenance.

I haven't gone back to read all the postings in this 5 year old thread.

In my opinion.......

The AJ16 engine is a robust design that will give a long service life without any special considerations or obsessive/compulsive servicing. I'm probably on the low side but I'll toss out 200,000 miles/320,000 kilometers as a typical life span that can be easily achieved without any unusual effort or considerations. No specialty oils, no particular effort, no hand-wringing. Use a whatever decent oil and filter is on sale that day and change every 5000-6000 miles. You'd have to go out of your way to find a brand/type of oil or filter that is actually detrimental to your engine. You're now free to worry about other things.

If your driving and ownership circumstances require than that (or you're trying to break some sort of durability record for the fun of it!) then you can start considering the finer points of all this. Trucking and taxi companies, for example, go thru great efforts to wring 300-400-500,000 miles out of an engine...or even more. Fewer engine overhauls/replacements obviously has a serious impact on their bottom-line profitability.

with a good A40/229.5 oil with lots of tbn you can do up to 20k, probably will have to add a quart or two along the way

i change every 15k, nice and clean

 

Jaguar issued a form for us to fill out when we performed the service. The customer was provided a copy and one went into the service record.

Geez, I wonder if using a full synthetic oil would extend it significantly further! I have been changing it out every 7,500 miles on full synthetic, since it only costs a few more dollars.
