Default Oil filter question for the cat daddy kings

Both my '95 XJ6 (X300) and my '95 XJS need an oil change. If memory serves correctly, I have used Purolator 30381 and Fram 2995 filters on both cars over the years but two different local parts stores have sold me Purolator 15317 filters and claim that is what their computers say I need but the filters look too small compared to what I used to use and I don't know if I should use them. They are UNF-2B just like the old ones but are much smaller. Are these new filters good to go on both 4.0 engines or do I need the old numbers?
Thanks so much.

I'm a bit confused and the poor kids behind the counter at the parts stores just stare at me blankly. I doubt they have ever seen a 4 litre Jag engine. They always comment "that thing calls for an awful lot of oil."

Lots of filter manufacturers downsize. It would probably be OK.

If you wanna stick with a bigger filter....I would....look for Bosch 72147, Jaguar EBC9658, AC Delco PF964, Purolator L30381. I'm sure there are many others.

Cheers

I use a Mann W930/13 oil filter for the XJ6; don't know about what's workable for the XJS. The Mann came to me highly recommended. No problems with it to date and it's a metal tank. Approx. $12.

I use this large MANN filter. Its the W940/5 on the box: 1997 Jaguar XJ6 Mann-Filter Engine Oil Filter - Buy W0133-1633452 Engine Oil Filter Online

I was pleasantly surprised to find that you can fit a socket on the end of it to remove it with much more ease. Couldn't do that with the small MANN filter, which I've also used previously.

I used Mann on my previous XJ6 and currently on my XJR. You can order it online from Amsoil, W930-13:

I just bought a box of bosch oil filters for my 95 xjr and they are smaller than the others I had been using my indie didnt want to use them they are usa made bosch p/n 72209 and are the ones the book recommended is it okay to use them the other bosch ones I had before these where leftover from my 92 aj 6 engined
sovereign they where larger than the 72209 I recently bought is it okay to use these as my indie didnt want to use the smaller ones
But I have a box of 12 of them and would love an outside opinion

i've often used bosch 72147 which is shorter than the 72209 on my various jags and never had any
probem of course the smaller size certainly suggests
less filtering ability but I'll wager you'd need to run an engine for 150k under laboratory test conditions to detect any
meaningful difference perhaps doubly so since most of us here are fastidious about fluid changes and such Besides the shorter length makes it easier for me at least to change the filter
Anyhow my two cents worth is to use the filter you have and don't think twice about it boy these cobbled up postings without proper sentences and puntuation sure are hard to read, huh grin grin

A test of 54 oil filters for a single application was posted on "that popular oil site where they argue the finer points of oil". The filtering media ranged from 81 square inches to 300+ square inches. The one at 81 square inches was ... you guessed it ... the Bosch.

Hey Plums I am on that forum as well being the owner of some weird cars and bikes could you put the link to that test if its not to hard
that forum is pretty hard to find things on

Not like this forum which is so easy to find stuff on

Also does anyone know if there is a purolator pure one filter that cross references to the AJ16 I6 engines when I looked in the catalogue there was nothing listed for the AJ16 engine that's why I went with the Bosch premium
I really wanted to use the purolator pure one just couldnt find the model that fits and as no one sells them in australia I need to order from the USA gets costly buying them and then finding they are the wrong ones
