Oil Pressure

Oil Pressure
hi guys,
Just brought a 1997 XJ6 about two days ago.
Now here is the problem, i just performed an oil change on the car and after driving it. The oil pressure dropped to zero then two seconds later returned to normal. This was while the engine was idleing. It was done it twice in the matter of 25 miles. I put a kendall synthetic oil in it.
Is this a oil sending unit problem, or a main bearing problem.
I think im going to use a thinker oil, like a 20/50
Any suggestions and comments?
Thanks,
Rich

Moving this over to the X300 section.
However, someone may correct me but I seem to remember that the oil pressure switch/gauge on these later cars is of the Yes/No type and will either read zero or normal and not show variations in pressure as the old XJ40's used to.
20/50 good idea.
The main question is, was it OK before the change. and did you fill the filter with oil before fitting it?
Also did you knock the connections to the sender unit.
Any check engine lights or fault messages.
I would be looking to sort out something minor, rather than immediately suspecting main bearings, especially if all was OK before the oil change.
These engines are noted for being fairly bomb proof.
Almost forgot, Welcome to the forum

Rich,
A 1997 XJ6 is also known as an X300, and someone will possibly move your post to that area. This area is for the Pre AJ6 and AJ16 engines.
I would BET on the sender unit, as there was a rework on that unit to a "switch style" sender in lieu of the old style "real sensor" units. The new units give a preset reading, or Zero, and that keeps the calm for the drivers that used to panic somewhat with a lowering of the dash gauge at idle and hot, mainly on the mighty V12, but others suffered as well.
Synthetic, versus Dino, 20W/50 is that no matter what the make up of the product is.

dont use lighter than 20-50 in that engine. it doesnt like it and youll end up with issues like chain/tensioner buzzing, and low oil pressure at idle. That engine was specificlly designed for 20-50 and Ive tried light oil in mine (it was free) and ended up with the above issues. I went back to 20-50 and problems went away

thank you for all the reply's guys...really do appreciate it.
The gauge never dipped before the oil change, but i only drove it a short distance.
I did put 20w50 in it today, and it did it again on the drove home.
I didnt fill the oil filter no...bad move?
No knocks or check engine lights on
thanks again,
Rich
ohh and thanks for moving it to the correct place...didnt realize it was classifed as a x300.
