Default Oil Pressure Switch 95 XJ6VP

The oil pressure sender is leaking profusely on my 1995 XJ6VP. I have never heard of the sender leaking. Is this common? I noticed the replacement sender has a resister built into the wire. I know the current sender doesn’t read the actual pressure and just sits on “N” if the range is good. Why would the new sender have the resister?

Resistor is to change the pressure reading. Either its not the genuine sensor and it needed 'adjusting' resistor the match the Jaguar gauge or its there to make sure that gauge shows pressure even if it on the low side.
If its not the variable sensor its crap anyway, mine will only show low oil pressure if there is below ~2.5l of oil in the system.

First, the oil leak. Are you certain it's the sender? Sender is in close proximity to the oil filter, also very close to the oil cooler bypass - which has 4 o-rings and is a known leak point.

I think it depends on the VIN, but with a '95 I'm guessing your car was built early enough to get the oil pressure transducer. The transducer converts oil pressure to a variable electrical voltage that drives the gauge on the IP. It also had an annoying tendency to report "0" and light the oil pressure light at idle when there was, in fact, normal idle oil pressure going on. After significant numbers of customer complaints of no oil pressure, particularly while still under warranty - Jaguar released a "fix kit" consisting of an oil pressure switch (8 psi, I believe) and a resistor. The dealer was supposed to reprogram the Instrument Panel after fitment.

I fit the switch + resistor in lieu of the failed transducer but did not reprogram the IP. My gauge now runs just above or below (can't recall which) the center mark. Not entirely sure what utility is obtained by the IP reprogram, unless it is to make it run at dead-center.

Mine leaked, it happens. Buy a new one and you're good to go.

The newer sender uses a 19" (or was it 17"?) deep socket to install. The old ones require a crow's foot to install...or you might be able to get it loose/tight with the right sized stubby wrench. Be prepared to bang a knuckle...

I replaced the sender today. NO more leaks! I was glad Vee that yours leaked as well! I had never heard of one leaking!

Now, I have a CEL that keeps coming on even though all O2 sensors have been replaced. See separate post.

THANKS for all the posts and links!

This is a GREAT forum!

When I worked on Series I, II, II XJ6 sedans (1969-1987) it was uncommon for the oil pressure switches to NOT leak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the modern world of more reliable auto parts. (they still fail, but less often)

I agree. I have learned that this is a very common source for leaks.
