Power Steering Issue
I'm sure the answer is in the forums, somewhere, but I thought I would just ask....
My power steering started making noise so I checked the fluid.
It seemed low, so I topped it up.
Next day. The reservoir was pretty much empty.
I filled it back up and while it the motor was running and the lid to the reservoir was off I noticed the the fluid seem to be foamy and swirling around furiously....
Since I haven't noticed such a thing 'cause I haven't had a steering problem with any of the dozens of cars I've owned since 1978, I don't know what the fluid is supposed look like in the reservoir when it is running. It sure is running out, though.
It probably shouldn't be foamy or frothy, right?
I'm wondering if the place where it is leaking out of is also letting air leak in...
Just wondering before I tear into it sometime between now and snow.

Is the fluid pink rather than red? There is a power steering fluid cooler located in the right hand end of the radiator. It is immersed in coolant, and it is not unheard of for the coupling to tear from the tank if you have been fitting new hoses or tighteneing old ones. The power steering fluid can then mix with coolant. Not good, ask me how I know!

Actually, it was pretty dirty and looked like old motor oil.
After running several containers of "Power Steering Fluid"; the almost clear, yellow-ish stuff...I think it was made by Prestone.. anyway, after a few containers of that leaked right out,
I put some plain old Dextron III ATF into it and whaddaya know!
It hasn't leaked out.
I probably had 1996 fluid in it so it was probably just water, oil and dirt after 23 years.
I'm hoping that more or less flushing the system and putting the ATF in, it help the seals to seal 'cause that seems to be just what happened.
