Default Are radiator fan motors rebuildable?

My upper fan motor on my 96xj6 is getting noisy, probably the bearings going bad. Is this something that can be repaired? New motors are pricey and who knows if used are any good. Does anyone have experience rebuilding these?

Hi Scotlad,

When one of the fan motors on our '93 XJ40 became noisy, I considered trying to oil the shaft, but neither end of the shaft is accessible without disassembly, and for some reason I can't recall, I decided not to try to disassemble the motor.

I did some research and learned that the X308 fans are essentially the same as those on the X300s and late XJ40s. So I bought an entire salvaged X308 cowl with both fans for very little money on eBay (I think I only paid $50 or $60 for the whole assembly - shop around and you may get lucky too).

I think I had to adapt the electrical connector to fit our '93, but I believe any X308 fan should fit your X300 without modification. Find one from a late X308 to get the newest fans you can.

And for the record, our X308 fan is still going strong several years later, and I still have the spare.

Cheers,

Don

Ever look into aftermarket fans ? I don't know what fits or available . Also on the 300's they run a @ slow speed all the time. Great for the bearings & brushes......

Thanks for the replies guys. I had thought of aftermarket fans but I guess I wanted to keep it looking stock and also I did not want to come up with a mounting system and electrical splicing.
I have not removed the fan assembly yet so I do not know if the fan motor can be taken apart or it is some kind of sealed for life system. Someone had also spray painted the upper fan yellow, so this is also for cosmetic purposes.

Well it looks like fan motors are the least of my problems right now. On the way home from work tonight I was rear ended and a lot of damage to the trunk and even the rear window was blown out. I had the car for less than a month and had spent lots of time detailing and doing maintenance. I was stopped to make a left turn and he probably hit me at 30-40 mph, it was quite a bang!
Luckily I walked away with a slightly sore neck. Both cops mentioned that the quality of the car prevented serious injury. The vehicle that hit me was a large commercial van and he had more serious damage than me,both his air bags went off and his right side wheel and A arm ripped off
It made me sick looking at my car leaving on a wrecker, hopefully the frame is not bent. The car did have a clean CarFax, not any more.

Commercial vans, especially plain white ones are the scourge of the
road. They are always in a hurry and driven by mad men.

In UK/Ireland we have a demographic sub-group known as "white van man"!

Wow, that's twice this year that a new member with a "new" X300 had it wrecked so soon after beginning to get to know the car.... very sorry to hear about this.

Glad you are OK. The bad news is that the car will probably be totaled out by insurance as the residual just isn't very high. Even what would normally be considered small repairs on newer cars have spelled the end for many X300s unfortunately.

Hope yours is fixable!

Depends on what kind of Ins. you have. Full Tort in PA (right to sue , pain & suffering) ??? Did you see a Dr./ER within 24 hours after? How sore is is neck? Answer yes to those 3 questions, see a lawyer. Ins. Co's hate people with Full Tort .
