Default Rear Brake Pads.

Hi all, I have myself in a bit of bother, My rear brake pads are overdue for a change, so I did the due diligence, regarding brands, types etc and ordered a set of TRW GDB1109.
All was going well, I had the Jag up on stands with the rear wheels off and a Caliper apart before I realised the pads I had purchased were the wrong ones, Much smaller than the ones already installed. No Amount of grunting or swearing was going to make them fit.
I put everything back together and checked the TRW web site to see what had gone wrong and the pads I had purchased were indeed the ones listed for my 95 X300 3.2lt.
I'm at a bit of a lose now, As I purchased the pads online, I will have to send them back to be returned. But I am still in need of a replacement set? Has anyone else had these kinds of compatibility issues with our brake pads and what does everyone else use?

Having typed that part number in it does seem to be listing the correct dimensions for the pads shown on many other sites after typing in jlm21919 123x43x17
So are the correct parts in the box?
Have a measure!

how big are you originals?

Other sites show a big pad however.

Most online store’s pictures are for illustration only. So always go by the OEM number. It is also not uncommon that pads in the box may be different from what is shown on the box, so some manufacturers also print the stock number on the pads to help verify that box and contents are a match. If everything is correct, have you or the previous owner modified the brake before, like using larger brake disks, calipers and brake pads? When I last did my brakes I noticed that the factory original rear disks are larger than those in front.

Thank you for your reply guys, I can confirm that the new pads I have and that are listed as compatible with my x300 are TRW GDB1109, I can also confirm that I have not modified the rear breaks although I can not speak for any of the three previous owners.
After spending what seemed like an endless amount of time, searching the web for an answer and becoming filled with self-doubt, that I had somehow mistakenly thought I had the wrong size. I jacked her up again today and removed a set with a couple of satisfying results. 1. The TRW pads are definitely smaller then what is fitted. 2. The existing pads are Bendix 10475713.
Assuming the compatibility charts on eBay, TRW and local parts store web sites are not all wrong, I can only assume that Qvhk has made a good point and a previous owner has upgraded the brakes. Although I can not for mt life of me understand why you would go to the trouble.

Well I think TRW have the wrong data, as the other sites (in my picture) show the size as 140 which is what you have.

Try searching for the jlm21919 number.

Mike,

Been here a few times, with daughters XJ40 and my X300.

DB 1275, Bendix number is what eventually fitted both cars.

The Bendix online sucks big time, and I have given up trying to get then to do something about it.

OLD, like me, hand written lists in the shed just confirmed what I used, 3 beers to find it.

The specs on DB1275 are:

140 X 58 X 17 = 2 pads
141 X 48 X 17 = 2 pads.

I have been in Spare Parts 55 years, and the rear pads on the XJ40 onwards were always a "to sample" where I worked, as the books etc are simply wrong, or don't list rears for some odd reason. Retired now, so care factor is low.

Also see data on British Parts which always carries the Jaguar Parts number (JLM21344 is the as JLM21919) and a data sheet on aftermarket parts - in this case the measurements of the rear pads (see picture)

AH - the great parts debacle !
You do in fact appear to have received the incorrect sized pads, not incorrect calipers fitted to your car.
The TRW pads appear to match with Bendix DB1251 which I have a 2012 Bendix listing showing to fit the X300.
However their latest listing is for DB1275 (the larger pad) and matches with the British Parts page and many other listings for the X300. A google search reveals majority of pads listed are the larger size, with a few still listing the smaller ones.
I recall Tridon Australia listing the incorrect thermostat to fit X300 models. They listed the 54mm diameter thermostat (suiting the XJ Series 3) instead of the correct one of 67mm diameter.
You cannot always rely on parts catalogues.
Just as a matter of interest I have AKebono (American) pads fitted front & rear, brilliant pads, absolutely no brake dust.

For other readers who may find this thread, Jaguar OEM brake pad manufacturers during the X300 production years included Jurid, Mintex, Ate and Ferodo, and those companies still make great pads today. TRW is also an OEM to Jaguar. But like John, I've been using the Akebono ceramic pads on our Jags and other vehicles and find that they stop really well (though with slightly more brake pedal effort than the OE pads), they're quiet, and the dramatic reduction in brake dust is remarkable and wonderful.

Cheers,

Don

Thank you for all the responses and great information Guys, I hope this thread stands as a wealth of information for others treading the same path.
I ended up getting a refund on the TRW GDB1109 pads, that were definitely too small for my 95 X300 3.2lt, although even after contacting TRW by email, they remained adamant are the correct pads?.
Using the Part number
JLM21344 I located a set of Girling branded pads at a local jag parts dealer. they actually cost about half what I had paid for the TRW pads and fitted perfectly at the larger size of 141mm. Failing that I would have located a set of Bendix DB 1275, that appeared to be the correct dimensions although as mentioned, it's hard to confirm the compatibility on there less than helpful web site.
Thanks again guys
