Default Remote won't disable alarm, how do I open car? - RESOLVED

I'm a little confused and wondering if I have a big problem here. Bought the car a month ago and this morning having an issue with the key fob.

I went to disable it by way of pressing the smaller button as you're supposed to only nothing happened. Tried again, same thing. Tried locking it and nothing happened. The lights on the key fob do come on but no disable-chirp or unlock of the doors happen.

I read in the security system part downloaded from this section that if I use the key in the door to unlock it that the alarm will still sound, (security feature) see attached photo.

So I'm not sure what to do next.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Shaune.

Default addendum...

The previous owner had 1 key and 1 remote with the car. No valet key. The remote's battery cover was missing at the time and when I bought the car he said he's look for it and contact me if he finds it. Needless to say he hasn't contacted me. There is gunk in the battery compartment and the '+' doesn't line up to where its supposed to but has never given any problems til now. I'd like to have clean it but figured if it wasn't broke, don't fix it. See attached photo.

Try getting into the car, put the ignition key in the ignition and turn the key to start QUICKLY 3 TIMES. This procedure works with my '95 XJS when the same thing happens to me on the rare occasion...

I believe you have 20-30 seconds from you open the door with a key, untill you have to turn on the ignition with the same key. You will hear a chirp count every second, but the alarm won't go off straight away. Had to do it once and turning the key a single time, not three, was enough for me. May be market dependant?

Replace the batteries and clean up the compartment, before trying to relearn the alarm into the system. Oh, and cover up the batteries to keep dirt out. Duct tape comes to mind

Thank you for all of the replies. Just wondering if I should remove the key from the ignition once the third revolution has completed or just start the car? Would it matter if I keep the door open the whole time or should I close it prior to doing it? I hope it works cuz I'd hate to have the alarm go off and not be able to silence it. Does it re-arm itself after its been sounding for a bit like those aftermarket ones do? I'd imagine so but I have never waited long enough to know.

Right... From the Security System manual, page 7.

"To unlock and disarm alarm system (All markets except United Kingdom and Europe):
Turn key towards rear of vehicle and release.
Unlocks all doors, luggage compartment, fuel filler flap and disarms the alarm system (if fitted). It also turns on the interior lights for 15 seconds."

So no worries, mate. There's nothing to it. Just do it

I thought that was only if you lock/arm the car using the key.
Was under impression that if you use the remote to arm then you use it
to disarm, and if armed/locked with key then you must use key
to disarm. I just don't want to make a spectacle if the alarm doesnt
reset after a minute.

Default Fixed

I ended up just unlocking the door with the key. It did the usual 2 chirps it would have done if I were able to use the remote. I didn't bother doing the 3 revolutions of the key while in the ignition as stated in an above post just because I heard what I wanted to while using the key.

Time now to clean the remote, replace the 2 CR2016 batteries, and re-program the transmitter as per the Security System manual shows.

Thanks to all that replied. Last thing I wanted to do was bother the residents in my peaceful neighbourhood with a blaring car alarm echoing from a garage.

I'm in the same predicament as the OP. Somehow misplaced my key with a working fob and my other one had a dead battery.

So it's as simple as unlocking, getting in quickly, and turning the key backwards to disable the alarm?
