Limited availability of parts too. Mine has developed an oil weep from one of the output shafts, and I began to investigate what fitting new seals would entail. Didn’t look like any fun at all, and parts tricky to source. Jaguar classic didn’t have all of the necessary bits, which is never a good sign. I spoke with my technician contact at the local dealer, who has been very helpful in the past. His advice was to make sure the breather was clean and then cross my fingers! If it still weeps, let it weep, and top up occasionally. DO NOT TAKE IT APART he said,
my fingers are currently crossed, and I am on the lookout for a source for reconditioned units in case the need arises.

Countyjag, I also had seepage from both the output shaft seals. I had read from a forum member that if you change the fluid in the rear end that it sometimes rejuvenates the seals because of the fresh fluid. Well I had mine drained and filled with Mobile 1 synthetic and guess what? no more leaks. It probably will not work for worn out seals but it might be worth a try and its actually part of maintenance. I knew mine was leaking because I could smell it when I would walk around the back of the car. It's a whole lot easier and cheaper to try this first.

Changing the stub axles isn't that bad, although more complex than the previous Series III/ XJS diffs. I'm not sure if the seals can be changed without changing bearings, I have not rebuilt one of these diffs, but I have taken one apart.
The XJ40 is the same as the X300, some photos here ( not my photos)

I had oil leak from the right stub axel. I determined the problem to be that the vent was plugged. The vent is impossible to replace so I just rotated it a bunch of times as it felt like it was frozen at first. That solved the problem. Now I rotate it a bunch of times any time the car is on the rack for some other problem. Leak gone---- problem solved.
