I'm not a big fan of the wires on an X300 because it dates it a bit. I do remember back when I had the Xj40, people spoke about the weight of the car bending some of the wire rims...

^Wisdom.

As for spoke wheels, I love the look of them on a Mk II, 420, etc., but I'm not sure they're quite right for the X300. Granted, upon seeing SRL1990's pictures they didn't look as bad as I'd expected, but I think something like Cooke's wheels will give you that fine-spoked look without dating the car.

Default X300 1997 Rims and tires

Hi
I have a 1997 XJ6 L and have the stock 16x7 rims. I was looking at the Coventry Whitely wheels 17x8 with the 235 50 17 rims. I want a bigger wheel but don't want to get something too big or not enough tire height that ruins the ride? Anyone have the 17s or have a picture to post? Thanks.

Gents, I have a '95 XJR6 with the standard 17" wheels and 255/45/17 tyres, which I think suit the car, are not too heavy and probably a cheap option to obtain, along with various options from the '97-2003 V8 models. However, I used to have a 3.2 sport with 225/55/16 wheels / tyres, and that drove better particularly on bad road surfaces where my XJR is prone to tramlineing slightly even after rebuilding the front suspension. That said the roads in the north of England are in a terrible state these days, so may not be an issues to many of you. If i had spare money to spend, I would like some Torque Thrust Ds, similar width in 17" or maybe even 16".

When looking at non Jaguar wheels, it is important to bear in mind that X300s, and Jaguars generally, are designed to have hubcentric wheels, ie the wheel is centred by being a tight fit around the ring on the hub. This is a good thing, not least as it takes strain off of the nuts, and matches how the wheel is most likely to have been balanced.
A non Jaguar wheel may well fit, but on the wheel studs rather than the hub ring. Spacers can be bought to allow a larger wheel to be used, but not a smaller wheel obviously.

Offset is also important; XJs up to 2003 were medium offset, thereafter high offset. Unfortunately I dont have any numerical calibration of medium and high, but it will be online somewhere. Suffice to say, aftermarket wheels come in a wide assortment of offsets, and the wrong one could spoil your handling and or foul the bodywork or suspension.
Last but not least, I am assuming that the importance of maintaining the same overall circumference as original is understood.

Ps My XJR doesn't tramline. It is on standard wheels, with Dunlop Sportmaxx tyres of the Jaguar specified size and speed rating. Four wheel alignment checked...

I looked for other rims and then decided to stay standard, A Couple of people have used BMW E39 rims but you need different center caps. Here is the offset info:

If you put a 25 height tire on an 18 in rim the wheel well will look empty or the other hand if you put a 60 height tire or a 18 rim you won't be able to drive the car. Standard tire height for an X300 is 16 / 225 / 60 that combanation fills the wheel well just right. As an experiment go to wheel-rim & tire dealer and ask them to put a used 16/225/40 tire on your standard rim and see what it looks like. When you see it you'll get the message about rim and tire combos.

HERE IS A PICTURE OF MY JAG WITH 18/225/50's; NOTICE THE WHEEL WELL IS FILLED. (click on the attachment)
Hello Cooke.. I think it looks great! Question... Is there a reason you opted for the 225/50 vs 235/45 or 245/45 tires? No rubbing with the 50s at that width? I'm guessing any wider would have rubbed. THANK YOU!! I have a blue 1996 XJ6.. I believe I'm going to go with the 18" Whitley as well.. Cheers! Marc

I’m guessing, but if it was me, the choice of tyre would be determined by the requirement to keep the same overall circumference to avoid upsetting gearing and speedo.
