Default Smoke and smell burned

Hi everyone wish you all good

I need your help. Yesterday I was driving my XJ VDP and car smell burned.

So I open all doors and trunk and found smoke coming from fuse / computer box see photo below.

Please can someone explain why this and what I should do? Thanks

module runs the lighting system. can be a bad module or an issue with the wiring

Thank you so much. Is OK to drive the car or not?

And yes I fixed the lights with one garage but only lights small worka, after this the smoke came! So maybe they do it wrong OMG. Will check but is OK to drive the car with this smoke? Thanks

No, it's NOT OK to drive with smoke. You risk the car catching fire.

Try disconnecting the module as a temporary fix. If the smoke stops you can drive it temporarily to get it home.

It looks messy and a lot of wiring there that is not original and not done well. I would more suspect the smoke coming from that. Get a garage that knows what they are doing to look at it.

Yes I stopped the car and removed the battery wiring.
Will try take it back to garage by recovery to check.

Question, if I removed that wiring in box car can start or will not? I mean this box for lighting only right or? Thanks

Yes just the lights AFAIK, so should be fine. Certainly will do no harm to try.

Voltage regulator going high well above 13.5 volts on the B+ post on the alternator ? You should see this also on the battery positive post when running engine

You have one external light module on the later X300s and 2 separate on the early X300s

There is a cutover production # in the wiring guide ( # 739427 )

Voltage regulator going very high above 14.5 volt range ?

Thanks a lot. I have 1996 Jaguar xj6 vanden Pla 6 cylinders. Before I have 90 amper battery then I put 100 Amper. So it could from battery I need change it to 90 Amper? What you think? Thanks

You have a 120 amp alternator which is more powerful then normal 90 amp on other cars

OH OK so you think if I replace the battery back to 90 or 80 Amp will solve it?
Coz before I never saw this smoke or smell.

No, the capacity of the battery is irrelevant. I have a 100AH battery in my car.

90 AH battery just means it can supply 1 amp for 90 hours, or 9 amps for 10 hours.

Understand OK then will take the Jaguar again to electrical garage hope they can fix it.

Test the alternator . The voltage regulator inside the alternator is a IN435 as in Indy November

I didn't have much luck ordering the part off Ebay , they kept sending me a inferior part

This might be a better vendor :

I ended up obtaining a used Denso alternator off a donor X300

The original manufacture is Denso and many off brand replacements give a lot of problems from reading

Spin test the alternator on a machine ( if available in your area ) before installing

Yes we can test the alternator and see how much voltage have.
Will try send the Jaguar to garage to check too.

At this point you are better off removing the alternator and testing it off car , No need to fry anything else even a new lamp module

You are going to have to remove it anyway

Do not run the car until you know you have a good alternator , then reinstall it

The voltage regulator is inside the alternator and there is a fuse that is most likely blown ( this one is needed for the voltage regulator to work ) in the right engine fuse box # 10 / 5 amp ( red )

Do not simply replace the fuse then give the car a test run , too easy

See page 38 and 45 :

The #r 1 fuse is closest on the row as the fuse box terminal post

Hi everyone sorry for late

The smoke was came from two + wires as I understand from garage so he removed the second wire was touched the car body as this great heat and burns the trunk carpet as I understand.
Now no smoke and worka fine

Will share with you some photos below and really thanks you all.

Your interior looks fantastic....except for the steering wheel! You need to get that wheel replaced, or renewed!!! Then it'll be perfect!
