Stall at idle
#21
Do you thing the idle air valve needs to be replaced or is it just now a miss match between that valve and the position sensor and the ECM? There is another adjusting screw beside the idle air valve. Would messing with it do any good?
I really hate driving it like this especially to a city like Dallas, Texas. Is there any source information as to where dealers might be located that could do this job besides there?
Thanks Guy

Ok, here is what I have done. I drove the car to the next town about 25 miles away without any stop adjustment. Not fun. Lot of brake and use of neutral. I did find that on any one initial start up if the rpm was too high I got better results by shutting off and starting again. Wanted to idle around 1500. Later in the day after cool down I adjusted the B valve stop two turns. Got 1400 rpm. Another two turns got 1200. Another two turns and I could feel the B valve slightly sticking in the throat and got 1300 rpm. Took out two turns and got around 1200 on initial start up and would climb to 1300 rpm. I think we are talking about the idle air valve being out of control. When I cleaned it there was a thin layer of soot on the face of the plunger which I cleaned off.

You can go to JaguarUSA.com and click on 'Locate a Dealer' at the top to see if by chance there is a dealer closer to you than Dallas.
Good luck!

Now you are treading in that area I already mentioned, messing with stuff trying to compensate and mucking it up further. All it needs is the adaption reset. You kept track of how far you backed out the screw didn't you???

I agree with not mucking it up further. Just asking. Yes, I did back it out six 45 deg thurns and back in two. I kept good track and will set it back to the original setting before I turn it over to a dealer tech just like you requested I do. Your advice is well received and followed to the letter.

Boy, that's a relief. Thanks Steve. Guess I'll get my map out and figure out how to find one of the dealers in Dallas. Houston is even worse so I'm told. Does Indy have that kind of traffic? I was there a couple of years ago and It seemed like a really nice place.

Bob,
I just took a gander at where Holly Lake Ranch is....wrong side of the metroplex, unfortunately - but given your task to find someone at a dealer conversant with your car which is a teenager....you may want to get in touch with Motorcarman. Bob Gauff is very familiar with your car and likely that exact problem as well - I know he knows throttle-bodies and the intracacies of R&R of the TPS should that be necessary. A little farther...he's essentially between Boyd and Decatur so you have to cross or circumnavigate DFW, but it'd be worth the trip to me, vs. taking my chances at an unkown dealership.
Meant to mention, he has WDS req'd to perform your reset.

Bob, a trip to Bob Gauff would be well worth a few extra miles, he knows your car well.
Keep us posted!

Just took a closer look....round about 150 mi give or take 10%...but Bob was talking on the order of 100 to a dealer...no way I'd take my X300 to a dealer if Bob Gauff is only 50 mi farther! Fortunately...for me....Bob is closer than the nearest dealer!
Bob, if I were you....I'd look at Greenville, then 380 to Decatur, then 730 down to the cutoff to Bob's. There may be a closer "direct" route ..and some pinball-lights across 380 there...but a good road to nurse a troublesome car across....3 lanes ea. way mostly and relatively sparsely populated compared to going straight thru DFW. Besides...if high-idle is the problem...I'd much rather contend with more predictable traffic lights than the random stop-n-go of the plex. Even though it's a haul...I'm sure you will never regret taking a sick Jag to Bob!
and Steve...no foul...it was Bob's talk of driving to Dallas that spurred me to google to see which side he'd be approaching from...

I want to thank all of you guys a lot and I mean a lot. And I will definitely keep Bob Gauff in mind. But the problem of the fast idle has been solved. And this has got to be the most embarrassing situation I have ever had. When I reinstalled the throttle body I must have spent hours checking everything to be sure all the connections were made. And I did it many times. Now I have been in aviation all of my adult life and the first 12 years of my career was a flight test engineer flight testing the fastest and badest birds the Air Force had. And if I had done something as dumb as this I would not be here today.
But I took the car Monday to my Indy guy so he could try to connect with his $13,000 Snapon system. Couldn't connect. When he looked under the hood he asked my where the electronic connection to the throttle body was. I said it is on the bottom way down there under all those hoses and ducting where it connects to the throttle positiong sensor. Guess what? IT WASN'T CONNECTED. I had missed connecting the @#$% connector to the TPS. I couldn't believe it. I then connected it and the car ran perfectly after that. No fast idle and hopefully the stalling problem has been solved. I guess if you are going to screw up you might as well screw up in front of God and everybody including the entire international Jaguar forum.
It is amazing how much help you guys gave me. Thanks to Steve and all of you. I really feel like the biggest jerk on the forum. From now on I am going to fall back on my aviation techniques I have used in the past. When I take something apart I will develope a check list as I go for reinstalling. And now a days I will use my digital camera for pictures as I go. My Indy guy does that and he has caught me before. Never again.
Thanks again guys.

Confession is good for the soul :-)
I've been driving Jags for umpteen years and the ONLY time I've been on a flat-bed truck was when I left a distributor connector only partially seated. Grrrrrr! Of course I was 200 miles from home...on a Jaguar tour, no less.
It might be fun to start a "Confession" thread. If we're all honest about our bone-headed goof-ups there will be plenty of postings :-). I could contribute quite a few.
Cheers
