Default Starter motor question

Hi, is the solenoid replacable on the starter motor for an x300? I didn't see the solenoids available seperately.

Also, I know I'll have to drop the transmission mount to remove the top bolt to remove the starter. But can the starter be removed without removing the intake manifold? I don't have a lift, so it'll only be on ramps (limited access).

Thanks,

Bobby

The solenoid bolt heads are aft as the starter assembly is installed on the car

They are flat head countersink / taper Philips screws and impossible to get on plus I think they are loctited glued in

Starter has to come out

I have the Bocsh solenoid part # in the garage as I put one on

I removed my starter from below with wood blocks under the jack point at the rear wheels and a alligator jack under the transmission to lower it , front tires stay on the ground

A scissor jack would work

takes 4 feet of ratchet extension on a universal adaptor and a 15 mm socket

The top bolt is on very tight so a pipe to give you ratchet leverage helps

Thank you. We'll try that. The last time we removed the intake manifold for better access to the starter. This also helped when trying to re install the top starter mount bolt. I'm hoping to not remove the manifold this time around, if at all possible.

Keep asking questions

remove the 2 bolts from one side of the transmission cross member and loosen the 2 on the other side leaving them in place as a locator if the transmission may want to shift

Put heavy tape on the socket universal so it will not droop but can bend slightly

There is a concern of the exhaust pipes

I took out my radiator fan shroud only and keep the hood open as the engine front will rise

Tape is a good trick. We'll do the fan shroud too. It's easy enough to remove.

The fan motor plastic connector lock clips can break if pulled outward too far

1995 X-300. For what it's worth I replaced my starter with a gear reduction starter and didn't remove the intake manifold but was able to R&R it from below with front wheels raised on jack stands and undoing the transmission support so that the motor could be tilted down to access the starter bolts. Parker 7 has excellent advice, it wasn't an easy job the first time so I replaced it with a gear reduction starter hoping I won't have to do it again.

The top bolt being tight I tried using a impact gun to break it loose with the 4 foot extension from below

Nope , the extension would just absorb and rebound the torque and was a funny lesson in physics

Thanks all. The job went well. Took about 2.5 hours by myself. The tape trick was invaluable. Happy camper!
