Default Steering wheel adjustment, how much, and how to do it?

Sat in my XJR6 from Japan for the first time the other day as was surprised/shocked at how little leg room there is?! Especially for such a big car (from the outside).

Then thought I must be able to adjust the steering wheel, as it seems quite far forward (my arms are really bent, even with the seat back as far as it'll go) and low down, so my knees have hardly any room.

How can I adjust the steering wheel to be further back and higher up to give me more room? Thanks.

Thanks! I’ll give it a go. Is there much extra room available?

i see others have already helped you with the steering column adjustment, but if you are really tall and cant get the seat far enough back, you can always modify the seat rails to mount the seat further back on it - the previous owner did that to my car at least.

Now that sounds interesting! Any idea how to modify the rails, so the seat fits further back on them? Thanks.

I have never really looked too closely at it, but i can take some photos next time i visit the car in the garage (its in vinter storage at the moment)
Wouldn't surprise me if they simply drilled out some new mounting holes on the rails.

Please. That would be really helpful. I'm 6ft 3in, plus it's a sunroof model, and I was surprised at how cramped it is inside and how huge outside. Sort of like a reverse Tardis.

Will do - i'm 6,1ft so a bit shorter, and you really need to adopt a laid back stance with the sunroof models.
Riding with passengers in the rear seat behind me is a pain for both parties, but you have to make some compromises for those low classic proportions

I'm 6ft3 too and have no trouble in my current non sunroof x300 and didn't in my previous sunroof sport. That said, in the sunroof model you really need the seat almost all the way down, if you don't have electric seats, then you'll need to look for one.
Driving with passengers at the back, in a sunroof model, it's a big no-no unless they are children or the car is LWB in which case you can even drive with 3 large lads at the back, it's amazing what extra 20cm of space do.
Steering wheel will have to be set up all the way out, it's a bit short in the sport but manageable.

leave the knob off auto. when you feel it reach the end of its travel let go or you will break the cable. a lot of these cars have broken steering wheel stop switches

i’m 6’4 and don’t have a problem with hitting the roof. just need to tilt the seat all the way up and fully extend the wheel. you can’t drive the car with the seat upright it’s just not happening

It was pretty dark in the garage, but managed to take some photos of the modification.
I forgot to take comparative photos of the stock passenger side, but from looking at the photos it seems they just cut some steel rails and mounted the seat on that, as you can see the rail bolted to the original mounting holes in front of the new ones.

This mod does place the seat a slightly higher then stock though, so there is a tradeoff.
Since i dont need the extra travel i will probably remove the longer rails and go back to stock, just to get that 1cm extra lowering on the seat.
