Default Is there a way to get read the Check Engine error code without scanneron xj6 1997 ?

Replaced altenator, everything works fine, but Check Engine light poped up. I am hoping it will clear, but to ease my mind I would like to know what is the error. Is there a way to get the code without the scanner tool?

A cheap 'scanner-tool' is something like $15 on ebay.

Why not buy one???

If you have a smartphone or tablet, an ELM327 dongle can be had for even less than that. Bluetooth for Android, 802.11 for iOS, I b'lieve.

Alternator Charge light ?

Any auto parts store will read the code for free as long as you tell them you have a check engine light

Be sure to write the codes retrieved down

Your codes are on page 121 of the following doc

jagrepair.com/images/Training Guides/801S - 2000.pdf

Beyond the codes you can see live sensor data valus as you drive around with a ELM 327 , but there is a learning curve to setting it up

Video coming

I think the answer to the actual question is no. Unlike some vehicles where you can prompt the car to give you a series of coded flashes, the X300 needs a scanner ( except for the HVAC which will flash numbers corresponding to faults)

See page 167 of the 801s Doc for XJ6 ( X40 ) with AJ6 engine OBD 1 , this is model up until 1994.5 so it does what you're asking but not yours

Page 52 for XJ6 ( X300 ) OBD 2 with AJ16 engine starting in 1994.5 to 97
