I thought that it was the key to be programmed for the ignition tumbler.
I recently did the oposite of what you suggest: I reprogrammed a key by inserting a new chip and copying from the original one. Quite straightforward procedure done at a key specialist company.
Consider if it is an option to get a tumbler with one working key and copy your key set. Or just get one new set. For me it did cost nearly nothing.

The IGNITION LOCK BARREL is available as a replacement component.
BCC7849 is the part number but it must be 'made to order' from your VIN or the TIBBE key code so it will be a clone of the old one.
Kleman..... We don't have a KTM or 'chips' in the keys for the X300 here in the U.S.
1998 was the first model year to have that for the U.S. market.
