Default Tire ~ Practical Experience with these models

I am looking at either 215 (205) 65 R16s to go on my 1995 XJ6.

My choices currently boil down to:

Continental ControlContact Tour AS (215 /65 R16 98T SL BSW) 90,000 mile warr.

Yokohama YK580 (205 /60 R16 92H SL BSW) 60,000 mile warr.

Bridgestone Turanza EL42 (P 205 /65 R16 94T SL BSW NI) (no stated mile warr.)

I am looking to go down to a thinner tire for tramlining reasons, a straighter sidewall cross section.

Running stock rims.

Has anyone had experience with these on their Jag? ..or on another vehicle?

Looking for feedback on general items, ride, noise, etc.. any pros/cons.

Thank you in advance.

Depends where you buy them, but you'll find some shops won't fit the 92/94 weight range tires for you. They'll claim they won't support the car. That would limit your choices to the Conti's and make your task easy.....Or you could fit some Michelin Premiers A/S in the 225 /60 R16 98H SL size. Outstanding wet grip, quiet, comfortable, I couldn't be happier.

I discovered Discount Tire at one location in FTW, TX refused to fit the same tire in 215 /60 R16 95H SL. Because the Premier A/S wasn't offered in the 225 /60 R16 98H SL when I needed tires, and I didn't want the next size up, I had them shipped from Tire Rack and just took wheels only to a shop to have them fitted, so as to avoid any similar problems. Several months later my daughter was home from School with her S-Type and the Michelin Primacy MXV4's were done; I had 20k miles on the Premier 215 /60 R16 95H SL at the time, so I moved them to the S-type and fit the proper 225 /60 R16 98H SL size on the VDP, which had become available.

If you do go with the lighter weight range, do the calculations and make sure you have enough margin. I only checked the 95H and was convinced it was fine, but noted I couldn't let pressure run low-think 27 psig was minimum or something...forget now, because not an issue any longer.

It concerns me that you are experiencing tramlining with non-XJR (255) sized tires.

While the larger XJR tires are known to exacerbate tramlining if anything is amiss, and one of the possible fixes there is to go with narrower tires, I've not heard of tramlining being an issue with standard XJ6 tire sizes and suggestions to go narrower.

So that being said, you may not find going to a narrower tire solves your problem and may need to look at what is causing the issue such as worn bushings, ball joints and other front suspension.

But, specific to tires, when I was researching I found Tirerack's website and reviews very helpful. Their own testing and reviews are a good starting place, then diving into each tire's customer reviews is very helpful as you can search for the exact type of car the customer has such as a Jaguar of our type.

You also may find this thread helpful as it is a long discussion on tires and tramlining on the X300:

I have no opinion on the specific tires you are looking at unfortunately, but hope this response is never the less helpful.

Good luck!

I have had good experience with Turanzas in 215/60x16 on my Auusie Ford Falcon
Currently had Potenza R03's in 18" on my XJR and they're great
