Transmission cooler
Has anyone fitted an external oil radiator for the gearbox?
I noticed it cools with a pipe into the radiator header tank. My Aussie Ford Falcon has this arrangement and that model has a reputation for the oil pipe through the radiator failing, allowing pressurised hot coolant into the auto gearbox -> total death of box.
6 years ago I fitted a proper air-to-oil cooler to the Falcon to avoid this, and trackday-proof my gearbox - so far so good.
So the the 3.2 X300 - I am considering doing the same. every time I give it full throttle and it revs to redline, I have images of hot gearbox and very high pressure engine coolant.
Has anyone tried this?

Hell yes.
I thought that was standard upgrade in the southern hemisphere, haha.
My X300 has a Falcon cooler out the front, LH side for the transmission, and a Hyundai cooler on the RH side for the power steer. That means the radiator cools the coolant ONLY.
NO science in the following, I am simply toooooo old and grumpy for that stuff.
The thermo fans on that car rarely switch on during "non a/c" operation. Today was an example, traffic jam, basically a carpark, about 17c ambient, and after 1 hour of crawling I only heard the fans 3 times. OK, with the a/c ON, the fans run always, as per the rework thingy, duly altered by ME, so the coolers all get a draught to cool the units.
This "upgrade" has been done to ALL my Jags for as long as I can remember.
My V12's have all had that exchanger physically removed from their radiators during the cleaning by the specialists.
Works for me and many others in our group.

Here you go, as promised.
The first 2 are the trans cooler as seen from under the car with the lower splitter removed.
The 3rd is the Hyundai "pipe" steer cooler, also from under the car via the lower opening.
Not the best snaps, but since I have mesh behind the standard vane upper grille, access is awkward, but it keeps the bugs out in the bush, and these 2 units were installed via the top opening a long time ago.
Basically I went to a mob here called "U-Pull It" (you go in with your spanners and pull what you want and pay on the way out) and found them both in the general area of respective cars. the 10mm hose spigots was hardest to locate, but not impossible.
IMPORTANT note, in my opinion. I ONLY use Synthetic ATF in all my Jags, for the transmissions and the steer systems. It handles heat better than teh Mineral version, and I also change these systems every 2 years, NO exceptions.
