Default Unusual sound coming from engine

I have a sound coming from the '95 X300 engine, it is a metal rubbing sound. I used to have an '87 XJ6 SER. 3 with the same sound and it was the "flex plate". This time it happens going up hills and when the A/C is on, can this be the same culprit even though the a/c is on?

I dont see the conenction with teh a/c either.

Common issues with the AJ16 engine is the front crank pulley/damper delaminating.

BUT

That is usually preceded by a loudish squealing sound when cold. Once its delaminated, then horrid clanging and banging will drive ya nuts.

Remove the a/c belt, start the engine, note the change etc of said noise. The a/c idler pulley is OLD now, and should have been replaced as a matter of service with a belt change loooooong ago, probably a belt only was done as a short cut.

Dreaded timing chain rattle at 1500 ish RPM, may be present also.

While you're in the neighborhood, mark your damper so you'll know when/if it starts delaminating. A/C idler pulley can be had for $10-$20 vice the $60+ for the OEM Jag version.....unless you are partial to the weight savings and just "Gotta have PLASTIC" in which case there is likely a more cost-effective replacement if you search the local auto-parts inventory. I'll find my thread and and edit in a link that gives the part number of the steel one.

Thanks for the replies. You maybe be right it is two separate things, the flex plate and the front crank pulley. Last year I had all the timing chains and seals replaced and did a valve job as well. I also replaced all the belts, but did not notice any problem with the pulley. The sound is very similar to metal hitting with metal in which I posted, that it sounds like the ring gear (flex plate). One problem is getting a new flex plate, I have seen one for 600 USD and scrap yard ones (which would be problematic at best), any suppliers who sell this would be welcome.
