Today my 96 vanden plas 4.0 i6 started acting strange. The engine idle rises and lowers over and over, it only shifts into second gear unless I accelerate hard, the air conditioning suddenly blows warm air unless I accelerate hard and then it blows nice and cold. Also there was blue smoke billowing out the tail pipes once while idling at a trafic light. When i go to pull away from a stop the engine stumbles but then accelerates away fine.Sometimes the idle stays around 1500 while I'm slowing down and I need to make the brakes slow the car instead of engine braking, if I slip into neutral the engine revs quite high. All this on a ten mile ride just today. What's going wrong? I should also mention, I have no trouble lights on the dash.

Reason: forgot something
Buut then there are 2 others being the rototyy swith just fwd as the square sheet metal and the one linier sitch on the right side of the shift box from the top side tyhat gets moisture in it .
tHE ROTORY SWITCH HAS A YHIN O - RING SEAL / HARD TO PLACSE BACK IN POSITION .
If this was a sudden onset of the problems, it could be the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) failing. That is the item that is most suspect for sudden poor running. It can cause weird behavior without setting any codes. Have you ever replaced it? If not, that would be a good place to start.
Odd things can happen if the Mass Airflow meter (MAF) or the coolant temperature sensor quit. Check the condition of all the connectors first.
Did the car just have any services done? If so you want to look for troubles that could be related to the service, or at least look around in the area of the car that was serviced.
If idle issues are a major symptom then a look at and clean of the idle air control valve IACV would seem to be in order. Vacuum leaks are a big suspicion too since a vac leak make the IACV less effective.
Clean the left extrnal aft round connector before a effort on the switches
i dont understand what you are saying to me. What is this external aft round connector and where is it? Under the hood or on the body or in the trunk? I truely dont know.
