Default Weird radio behaviour

My '97 X300 radio has started to misbehave in the most weird way. When I enter the car and switch on the radio for the first time after turning the ignition key, it doesn't switch on. However, if I press the cassette button beside the radio on/off switch and then press the on/off switch, it switches on and operates as normal, that is until after a while it may decide to stop responding to any of the buttons, including volume control, until I press the cassette button again.

This car is not used very often, about 5 or 6k miles a year, so it is hardly a major issue. But it is annoying and I wonder if anyone has come across this before and if there is a DIY solution.

Many thanks.

Very common issue actually.

There are several threads on radio problems & repair options covering this specific topic. I had the same issue and sent it to a repair shop for repair.

The only real option is to find a repair shop that will rebuild the radio and fix all the cold solder joints. In the US this costs about $250
