What to do with Jaguar XJ6
I have a 1996 Jaguar XJ6 that is in perfect condition interior and exterior, my problem is that all of a suddenly the car is not driving like it should it keep jerking me back and forth when I drive, going up the hill is even worst, so I took it to a local mechanic that works on Jaguars, he told me I will need to replace both catalytic converters and some other stuff for a total of $5.000 dollars, car is not worth more than $2500.00. What should I do????
Thanks Mark

Well, it depends. Does your state have emissions inspection and do you care? Do you want to keep the car? If you don't care and want to use factory parts and there is no inspection. This works well. Check engine light stays on, although I'm sure there is some way to reprogram it. I only drive mine about 5k/year and have had this set-up for three years.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your description, but typically, jerking back and forth while you drive has nothing to do with catalytic converters. That sounds to me like something in your steering and/or suspension has failed. It could be a tie rod end, or something like lower control arm bushings. I just repaired an XJ40 with this problem. Driving down the road the car would suddenly pull left or right with no warning. On inspection I could see the lower control arm bushings were shot, and the inner edges of the front tires were excessively worn, indicating they were toeing outward due to the perished bushings. Replacing the bushings solved the problem. While I had things apart I replaced the lower shock bushings and checked the upper control arm bushings, which were surprisingly fine.
Other issues that can contribute to your symptoms include wear in the steering rack, which can sometimes be at least partially addressed by adjusting the pinion preload; and also the rear subframe A-frame bushings, which contribute to vague steering when they fail.
Regarding the catalytic converters, was your Check Engine Light illuminated?
I agree with Lady P that you need to find another mechanic for a second opinion.
Cheers,
Don
