Yes, you'll need an OBDII scanner/code-reader. You have many choices such as standalone readers or bluetooth units that integrate with your smartphone.
I have a cheap Actron unit that works fine for example, and they are available at any of the retail auto parts stores.

Most auto supply stores will read the codes for free. But if you are going to keep the car buying a code reader is a good idea.
I have a Ultagauge that I use in my XJ6. It can be purchased online for about $70, and has many monitor functions in addition to reading codes.

I saw P0420/P0430 on many AJ16. You can clear the DTC(s) and the fault will re-appear several weeks/months later.
New cataverters are expensive but is really is the way to resolve the fault.
You can try 'cleaning' the cats but I don't live in an EPA 'non-attainment' area so most people in my area don't worry about emission related DTCs.
Muffler shops can 'weld-in' replacement cats so that might be an option.

Well it looks like I get to try this. I have had codes 0420 and 430 for awhile and when I went for inspection it turned out the bottom of the Front Y pipe had rusted out. So, I am replacing it with the "exhaust downpipe front no cats". (CBC6373). We'll put some O2 sensors in that and see how it works. When they take it apart we'll be able to see if the center cats are good or not. If good, I'll leave them in. Bad, take them out and put in straight pipes
