Hi forum,
I'm on the time honored hunt for working ignition coils and wanted to hear what everyone is using these days. The old threads talk of the mythic Japanese coils by Diamond Manufacturing and sold as Eurospare but I haven't found any of those. The first set of cheapos I bought can't be used above 50 mph or they give me the Christmas tree show before cutting out completely.
Partsgeek has various cheapo offerings from Prenco, Aftermarket, Walker, Standard Motor Products, Brock, API, DIY Solutions, and pricier Beck-Arnely ($70), NGK ($360 a pop so I'd rather not).
Are these all crap too? Is there anything decent out there below the manufacturer rip off price?
thanks,
Trevor
I’d pass on any used ones. You don’t know how far the sun has set on the 25+ year old part.
I wouldn’t lump all of those brands into the crap pile. I don’t know if anyone who has tried the Standard branded coils. They’re a legit aftermarket maker, so I would go with that, if I had to choose one from your list, costing less than those NGKs.
Eurospare should not be confused with Diamond. If you happen to come across eurospare, it could be anything. Could be a rebranded Diamond, could be a rebranded no-name junky brand. Who knows. Same with Beck Arnley.
Diamond and QYL were the only known good brands. There may be others. I pay attention to these threads and I don’t recall anyone trying Standard. I believe there may be evidence of bad Prenco, DIY, and those other cheapo brands. Cross those off the list.
Amazon carries QYL coils for !995 to1997 4,0L engines. $55.00 plus shipping for six. Good parts. I ordered two sets two years ago and haven't opened up the second set yet.
Thanks very much for the quick replies everyone. I did not know about the QYL coils but I'm going to give the A-Premiums a whirl. I'm not expecting much at $55 for a 6 pack but what the hell.
Have any of you had to replace the connectors and wiring to the coils?
No. No wiring changes required. If you spot crunchy insulation at the connectors, which shouldn’t be a surprise given their age and environment, then replacing the connectors with some upgraded wires would be welcome.

Thank you.

Larry,
Can you confirm two things:
1. Are the coils on top a shiny black, or a yellowy color? Like dried epoxy glue?
2. Are the screwholes on the sides of the coils gold or silver?
I Purchased all 6 replacements from SNG barratt in 2017 and haven't had a problem since. The type I purchased were 60 Pound each, had a black top and were sold as the "Japanese" type. I've just had a look at their website and they don't appear to sell them anymore but instead have a "Genuine Jaguar" branded coil for 215 pounds and an aftermarket reproduction for 24 pounds. Bloody glad I needed and purchased mine when I did
Here is a comparison between a Diamond coil (top) and the new A-Premium part (bottom).
I don’t expect these to last that long. Can anyone post some pics of the QYL? I’m curious to see what that inner spring and rod look like, as well as whether the contact area the coil makes with the spring is similar to either one of these two.
Diamond Coil contact area with spring A-Performance coil top and spring. Note the smaller opening and thinner gauge spring that is inserted into at the coil. Also note the difference with the spring and rod as well…. Diamond top.

Weight of just the Diamond coil is 199g
weight of just the new coil is 212g
Someone was kind enough to upload a photo of a QYL coil. You will see that it is, in many ways, identical to the Diamond coils. I suspect that QYL may have bought out the existing stock from Diamond and simply fire sold them.

I just purchased a set of the A-Performance coils. So the immediate issue is the pin and lighter spring. You can see in Vee's pictures above that the pin is shorter, but the boot is the same length. When installing these coils the pin doesn't appear to make contact with the head of the spark plug. We have the QYL coils presently and when you install one there is a bit of tension just before the coil bottoms out (this means it hit the top of the spark plug). There is no such tension with the A-Performance coils, and when I look into the spark plug end of the boot you can see pin is not reaching far enough down the boot to make contact with the spark plug. I bought some brass rod to remake the pins a bit longer. We'll see how that works.
I'll check out stretching the spring tomorrow and report back. I've ordered some coils from SNG Barret, but they are back ordered till the end of the year. Hoping these to make these A-Performance work for just a few months.
