X300 Low Trans Fluid

First time posting here. Bought a sweet, well maintained X300/XJ6 with 175,000mi. Drives great. Did a road trip up to Oklahoma today. 500 miles round trip. Checked trans fluid when I bought it and it looked good. Thought to check it again when I got home since the trans was hot. Fluid level barely touched the bottom of the dip stick.
Shifted fine on the road. Let it sit for a few minutes and checked again. More fluid was on the dip stick which made me feel a little better.
I added two quarts of MaxLife and will take it for a drive tomorrow before checking again.
Does anyone know how low I was if the dip stick barely had any fluid on it when the trans was hot?
Great car BTW. My first Jag and it soaked up the highway miles. Was happy doing 70-80 the whole way. Got this saloon for around $2500. Full maintenance records. Great condition. Trying to keep it this way.

Welcome to the Forums.
When the fluid sorts itself out, please do an Intro in the New Members Area.
Your XJ6, as an X300, hangs out in the XJ6/XJR6 X300 Tech Section. Confused? you get used to the naming oddities very quickly.
Based on mine, I would add 1ltr, run it through the gears, leave it running, check, add more it needed.
I reckon near 1 - 2 ltrs should see it topped off.

I've moved your question from XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III to X300 forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.
