Smile X300 - In need of new rack and pinion

1995 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas

Hey Everybody,
For the last little while my Jag has been leaking steering fluid. I finally got it to my mechanic and he tried to repair the problem with no luck. He instructed me that I'd need a new rack and pinion, as the fluid is shooting to both the front wheels, when parked two puddles form on either side of the car.

I'm hoping to buy the part myself to save some money, and have him install it. Could anybody please verify that I'm going to be purchasing the correct part? I've come across a variety of prices starting from say $250 - $500...any suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

I guess either one would be OK but I always get nervous when the listings mention year/model combinations that never existed.

One possible alternative is Coventry West in Georgia. They specialize in Jaguar and do all rebuilding in-house. 800 331 2193.

Cheers

Or, you could buy the overhaul kit and get your engineer to rebuild it?

Default Steering rack for 1997 XJ6

Mine was leaking when I bought the car and my shop did a flush with sealer, that held for a couple of years.

A few months ago I noticed the steering getting stiff and heavy on occasion so my Jag expert put in a new rack.

That did not solve the heavy steering and I ended up with next to no power assist at idle speeds. This makes parallel parking next to impossible.

My Jag expert now wants to change the power steering pump.

I am a bit choked to have spent about $930 with labour, fluids and taxes and not solve the problem. Now I am looking at another large bill to fix the original problem.

The bottom line is if your steering rack is leaking that badly, then the pump is probably overworked and loosing pressure. In my case it should have been the power steering pump that was replaced and not the rack.

The long term solution was to replace both.

My eBay part arrived, took it to my mechanic, he checked to make sure the mounts matched and they did. He proceeded to remove my rack & pinion and when he tried to fit the part in I had bought off eBay it wouldn't fit! I was choked. I paid $450 for the eBay part.

My mechanic tracked down a local rack & pinion, replaced & installed everything and the grand total was $560! Very happy .
