Lightbulb X300 XJR Production Numbers

Found the following synopsis interesting:

XJR Evolution of the species

Second Generation Production Data 1994-1997

Total second gen. XJR build run was 6,547 cars out of 92,038 XJ series X300 cars built. Yes, these cars are rare too.

1994 - 1,340
1995 - 2,741
1996 - 2,148
1997 - 318

This must of course be referencing global production figures, as in the US the model years were 1995 through 1997 for the X300 XJR.

So I wonder if the 2,148 "1996" XJRs are really inclusive of the 1997 model year in the US, or if the 318 quantity are really all 1997 XJRs built globally?

Or simply put, if an owner in the US has a 1997 XJR, is that one of 2,148 or one of 318?

Jaguar quotes *calendar* year production numbers, not model year....or at least that's how it was done back in the day. So, for example, some (maybe half or so?) of the 2148 '1996' cars were surely designated as '1997 model year' for the NA market....and probably others as well

Cheers

'DOMs" ?

Your door sticker should show the official 'build date'....which might well be a few weeks later than the dates seens on individual parts.

It makes perfect sense that a 1997 MY car should be built in calendar 1997....or late-ish 1996.

it can get tricky when a manufacturer sells cars worldwide as different countries handle the 'model year' designation in their own way. That's probably why Jaguar did (and perhaps still does) quote calendar year production figures.

Jaguar has had some oddball designations over the years. My USA-spec XJS was built in Feb 1987 but carried a '1988' VIN. In most Jaguar tech literature, however, it is regarded as 1987.5 car, or even 1987.25 car (Jaguar is the only brand I know of that has gone as far as quarter-year designations).

Again with XJSs Jaguar did something similar circa 1991 or so. I can't remember the details....but it was a bit odd.

My Ser III XJ6 was built Aug 1986 and carried a 1987 VIN....which seems reasonable to American brains.

I'm rambling. Sorry.

Anyhow, I wonder how far into calendar year 1997 the X300 production continued? Just a curiosity thing.

Cheers

Hi Doug

I checked the door stamp and it says Built April 1997...... The individual parts are stamped with mfg. dates in March 1997. That would make sense. Mine is an XJ6 (X300)...... 6 cyl 4.0L No super charger.......

I hope this helps

Default Jaguar VIN Codes

I've been trying to figure out colors and other information on my car. I was at the dealer today picking up a new sunroof seal. I gave him the last six, which is the serial number and he ran a partial build sheet from the Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalogue. It turns out the VIN code in the EPC doesn't match the VIN code on the plate under the windshield in positions 4-8 and 11. Also, I found out that my car is a California spec with downpipe and underfloor catalyst's. It's also a Sovereign LWB with the following options:
>Cup Holder
>High Mounted Stop LAmp
>Garage Door Opener
>Sunroof
>A/C
>Heated Rear Seat
>Traction Control

Hey dag, that's cool the dealer can tell you all that about your car. But can't you tell just by looking at it?? Lol, jk. Notice that the USA has its own vin: The original vin from birth is stamped next to the battery! Didn't the dealer know that? It is similar and the serial # would be the same. It is referenced in the JDHT manual too. That would explain your discrepancy.

Couple of things, I will look for the original VIN when i get it back from being painted. Also, he checked both the US and Global databases and I first noticed the "discrepancy" when trying to decipher my VIN# from the JDHT manual. To be honest I didn't know what was an option and what was included as part of the Sovereign level. As I have to redo the exhaust in the spring, I always thought I had a 49 state car and could not understand why I had two sets of Cat's.
