Xj6 4.0 1976 idle adjustment help please
My XJ6 Runs very well, i would just like to slow the Idle speed by a tiny fraction, dont ask why, as there is not a problem, just a personal thing, as i am disabled, and need slow Idle for personal reason..
If you look down at the throttle area in general, on the forward face on the top of the throtle body, about 1 inch down, you will just see a hole for a small Allen key, this must have something to do with the adjustment, problem is, its stuck solid, its very hard to get a Key in there in the first place, im using a special cut Allen key, made to get in, anyway, its Solid, i just bend the Keys, also the Allen key hole will be getting rounded now due to all the efforts to turn the Damm thing.
i was wondering, on the top of the Throttle body, you see 3 Strange looking screws, must use a special tool to open?, if i could get this top part of, that would let me closer to the inside of the Allen Key, where it goes right through and out the other side where it pushes against the Throttle thing thus controlling idle, then maybe i could give it a sharp blow with a fine chistle to free the Allen Key, if your not sure what im on about, i can photograph and mail you a picture, if your Engine is before 1975 your not going to understand as your Set up is different,
maybe there is another way to slow the idle on a 95 - 97 Engine if there is please let me know ASAP
please do not reply [ no coutch potatoes try this or that] only reply from person that knows exactly what to do, im 90% sure thats the Idle screw im working on, because its making contact with the opening of the throtle mechanism, you dont have to work for NASA to see that.
im just frightn`t to remove that top section held down with 3 Mystery screws/bolts.. incase its all gets 2 technical for me, i can only do simple mechanics, or disturb the throtle body down below it.
greatfull for any help 1995 - 97 Jag owners only reply please.
regards
John

I seem to remember reading somewhere in my days at Jaguar that the AJ16 idle was controlled by a "stepper motor", similar to the AJ6, but it is ECU controlled, and adjustment is a dealer thing via the diagnostic port???.
I agree that there MUST be a provision to set "base idle", prior to ECU take over, but have no idea at the moment.
I will do a look around on my "big block" 3.2 tomorrow, and if I find anything exciting I will post back.

Secondly, you have used so many different dates in your post, that anyone is going to have to guess as to just what car you are talking about.
As far as I am aware the 4.0 did not exist in 1976 and what this has to do with 1995 - 1997 models, well...
Please will you clarify your dates, so that we can get things straight and at least give our superb support guys a chance.
Looks like you may have lost one of them.
Good luck with the idle speed, if you are trying to reduce 'Creep' this I can fully understand, my old mum is also disabled.

Here, here Richard.
Shonnie, the good news is that this forum is pretty forgiving to people who show their ***- heck, I still get replys!
The idle is set on the X300 by the ISSC control. It is set on the' 95, the '96, and the '97by the ECU with a stepper valve. So, go ahead and fiddle with the throotle home set scre all you want, you will not properly set the idle. There are a number of problems that can manifest themselves with idle which stays above 1500 rpm. If you would like to try again and describe what your symptoms are (preferably while you are sober) you can probably get some help. Or just drive it to the dealer and see what he says. he, he.
