XJ6 Battery Change
Hi All
I just installed new battery and my car wouldnt start.
Started fine before and ran great, excellant in fact
then when it wouldnt start called dealer and they told me to reset ecm by taking negative cable off battery. and wait 5 mins.
I did that.
when i reset the car beeped like an alarm chirp
then I started the car and it started right up
ran great!! then I drove to car wash and turned it off while they vacummed
the car.
car wont start now, and restting battery wont help anymore.
I am a brand new jaguar owner, appreciate any help

When you say "won't start" I am assuming, in this case, that the starter does not turn? If so it does sound like a possible alarm problem.
But.....just for the heck of it.....
Go out and try again. Turn the key '"on" and look at the "P" on the gearshift indicator. Is it glowing red? It should be. If not, wiggle the gearshift back-n-forth and see if it suddenly turns red. If it does, try starting the car.
Cheers

The car shouldn't beep when you reconnect the negative lead.
You should have the ignition turned off.
Try Doug's trick and if no luck do a proper 'hard reset' take off the negative lead and touch it to the battery +ve terminal for ten seconds.
That properly drains the capacitors in the modules.
5 mins of simple disconnect is probably not long enough.

Hi Doug and Steve. Thank you for taking the time to reply. When i reset it the first time, the ignition was off and heard the single alarm chirp.
left the negative off for as long as 45 mins, still same result no start, yes starter would not turn all gauges inside no power, when key is on I do have power at ac, and hazards and wipers
but no indication of power at gauges speed, oil, milage.
Put car in neutral as well and tried to start, nothing at all no light indicator on P

Hello
I did the hard reset by touching negative and positive together for 30 secs both were disconnected from battery still no crank
also checked if P indicator was red, it was but no cranking.
please help, what could it be, the thought of taking it to dealer who wants to charge me 300 for two hours is crazy.
?????????????????

Inertia switch?
I have never had an instance where I had to check my inertia switch so I wouldn't know what to expect as in the 'tell-tale' signs but I wonder if while vacuuming the floors that it was tripped. I'm not certain but I think it's located under gas pedal.
The experts will chime in.

hi guys thank you for helping me, first my key is a new factory ordered key because when i bought car at auction it had no key, they key worked fine everytime i started it up until the battery change. i do not have a remote for the car. i will try inertia switch and post back, remember after i reset battery the first time it started right up, i drove it around the block by my mechanics shop, and she felt so good, it just didnt start again after i drove it into car wash to get washed
thank you

Frank,
I don't think it's the inertia switch.
Much more likely a security problem with your key triggered by the battery change.
I'm not competent to advise on this problem but there are several folk who can.
Hopefully they will step forward soon.

We've been forgetting that USA market cars did not have "immobilizer" capability to the alarm system.
Near as I can tell the BPM (Body Processor Module) takes input from the transmission decoder module and ignition switch before grounding/energizing the starter relay. This ground is broken by the rotary switch on the side of the transmission unless the car is in "P" or "N".
Personally at this point I would check inputs and outputs at the starter realy and work upstream or downstream from there. Frank, do you have a 12v test light ?
Cheers

Doug,
You're right of course. Simplifies things though.
Some useful checks here
Jaguar XJ6; Jaguar X300; 1995 Jaguar XJ6 3.2 Sport
including the mention of no immobiliser in the US !

Some notes:
1) the pretty pictures (diagrams) are for a right hand drive car. US inertia switches ar ein the right kickboard, not near the gas pedal
2) There are known issues with the ECM wiring getting wet- Check for corrosion on the ECM connectors.
So, exactly what is the story with changing the battery if there was no problem starting the car previously? Am I missing something?

Yes changed battery car wouldn't start called dealer adviser me to do reset removing negative cable from battery did it.
Got car to start. Then I test drove car for first time since I had it towed cause I had no key. I also had changed spark plugs and all six coils. The car ran fantastic. Pulled into hand car wash next to my mechanics shut off car so they could vacuum. Haven't been able to get started again. Key works fine. Ignition on gives red P indicator or in neutral.
Did hard reset. Can't start car. Checking starter relay today

Okay we'll since my last post I showed up at my mechanics where my car is sitting in the lot. Went to check the car put the key in and turned it. Bam. It started. Kept it in for a bit then turned it off to see if I could start it again. No luck now it won't start again. Can anyone help me narrow down this problem. Thank you.
