See page 48 and 83 for a ZF4HP - 22 transmission ( non - electronic controlled ) on your 3.2 liter version engine , cheaper .
This is a slightly different transmission then the ZF4HP - 24 ( electronic controlled with a transmission ECU ) on the 4.0 liter version engine
This is the same transmission series used on some BMW's in the time period

Did you hear a solenoid relay and solenoid unlock as you moved the ignition key during the heat of battle ? This allows the gear selector to move around
See page 89
Both the rotary switch ( below the floor pan ) and the linear switch item # 29 ( above the floor pan ) can be cleaned with a pencil eraser as they come apart and tinkered with , weak / fragile contact fingers that don't keep contact
There was a upgraded part # on the linear switch for whatever reason I think was fluid intrusion

Hi thanks sorry I only just checked for replies so apologies for the delay. When I press the brake I hear a loud click below shifter which I guess releases the lever. However the P sometimes glows red in which case it starts. No lit P and it won't start at all. Nothing. If I wiggle the shifter left to right the P lights up and off I go!

Researching for your 3.2 liter
The P light comes from the linear switch and the starter enable comes from the rotary switch ( mounted on the transmission itself )
They are both constructed with delicate contact fingers when taken apart and cleaned up .
See page 48 wiring guide as the 3.2 and superchargerd 4.0 ( using a even different General Motors transmission ) does not show a rotory switch
The question is if the linear switch is miss labeled on the print
The linear switch is in the gear shift box above the floor pan
The linear switch mount hardware is tricky and will take some time for me to recall
This is a linear switch on someones X300 on the right side of the shift post , red circle
The rotary switch if installed is on the left side transmission body
