XJ6VP Stereo Head Unit turned off, would not go on.!
Hi, I have a 1996 XJ6 Vanden Plas. It has a Jaguar 6cd
changer in the trunk. And I was driving today and the radio
unit just turned off, I cant turn on the stereo, so I cant
use the cd changer or the radio. I bought the car about 1
week ago and when I bought it the radio turned off again, so
the audio shop reset the computer then it started to work,
but today it turned off again. So any hints on what could
be done?or what is causing this, could it be faulty wires or
maybe water damage? any comments will be of help. thanks
P.S Before it turned off it had this thing on the litle screen "NO CONT" or something like that. THanks

RE: XJ6VP Stereo Head Unit turned off, would not go on.!!!!!!!!!
The radios on all 1995-1997 XJ6 models have been an ongoing problem. It sounds liek the radio will need to be replaced, we sell them rebuilt for $340 but it takes 2-3 weeks for me to get one from Jaguar in the UK. I am not sure how he "reset the computer" and it started working again, maybe the fuse was blown and he replaced it. NO CONT means the car doesn't recognize the radio. Each radio is coded to that particular car but if the code was needed it would ssay CODE.

RE: XJ6VP Stereo Head Unit turned off, would not go on.!!!!!!!!!
I have a 96 VDP, and I had a problem with the head unit where the radio would play, but none of the buttons would work. I was able to contact Alpine in the US, and they directed me to the New Jersey office where they said they repair Jagaur radios for a set $95. I don't have the information to get back in touch with the New Jersey location, but a little persistence and $95 may be worth it. They repaired my radio and I have not had any problems within the last year.

Check the wires...the wiring harnesses going to the radio, clock, and a/c heater control units all have a tendancy to chaffe over time. Chances are a wire is rubbing and causing power loss to the unit. Pull the radio out and look for broken/chaffed wires

Hi Folks - I had the same issue with a replacement cd changer that I purchased on eBay. The CD changer played intermittently, displayed the CONT message at times, and was just pathetic. I called Jaguar Heaven auto dismantlers in Stockton, CA and talked to Dan. Dan suggested I first try a CD cleaner. I purchased a disk from Best Buys (which was about $20) and I ran it in the changer a couple of times. The screen said that No Disk was present, but I guess that when it spun up, the little hairy things on the bottom did their job anyway. Music never sounded better! I have not encountered the CONT message again. Even if it doesn't work, it's not an expensive test. Good luck! Fyi - I love the folks (Dan & Ken) at Jaguar Heaven, 209-942-4524.
