XJR6 auto to manual conversion ( flywheel question)
Hi,
I have an XJ6R engine ( currently with auto box) and I am going to fit it into an XJC, I want to convert it to manual gearbox, and to this end I have purchased a Getrag 290 gearbox ( ex XJ40 4.0).
The question is can I replace the awful dual mass flywheel with a standard XJS 3.6 or other conventional flywheel and clutch ?
Looking at the pictures of the XJS flywheel online it looks like the starter ring is further back, and with the flywheel being thinner, this would bring the clutch centre / cover plates further forward ?
Has anyone out there ever done this ?
Jim

You might be able to use the adaptor that is mounted between the rear of the crankshaft and the flexplate on the auto application to reposition any flywheel more rear ward. Alternatively, you could probably get a custom made racing flywheel and clutch from somewhere like Rob Beere racing.

I think the flywheel bolts directly to the crankshaft with no adaptor, but have a looks at the parts manual on www.jaguarclasicsparts.com

If you replace the dual-mass flywheel with a single mass, or custom one, you must certainly use a different driven plate, having springs, and perhaps pressure plate. The next challenge is to determine the tension needed for the driven plate springs to avoid drive line judder as the clutch engages.
An aluminium flywheel with steel insert can be quite expensive, so unless the vehicle is going to be used for track applications, or there is a definite problem with the dual-mass flywheel, it may be best from a cost standpoint to retain the dual-mass unit and associated parts.

A bit of a thread revival , just wondered if you solved the fly wheel issue , I have a Getrag 290 box XJS flywheel to fit to my 3.2 X300 .
Thanks,
Rich
