Xjr6 engine...what model?
I have an xjr6 engine and I'm trying to figure out what model it comes from. I think it is an x300, but not sure. Unfortunately I can't copy the picture of it Ob here. The words "Jaguar" & "XJR 6" are red and the valve cover is a basically smooth finish. This may not help at all but it's the only descriptors I know that may distinguish it. I'm sure one of the codes on the engine will give it away if someone can tell me what to loil for. Also, the engine is for sale if anyone is in need. It was purchased for $3500 as a direct replacement and never used. It is without the supercharger but it would be a great deal if anyone needed one as a replacement or an extra to have around.

It came from a 1995-96-97 XJR, which was part of the "X300" series. Specifically, the XJR was the "X306". There are probably some ID numbers on the engine that would indicate build date and such but I don't know the details.
About 6500 XJR/6s were built. I think about half of them came to the USA. Of those, a fair percentage are already in the scrapyard, I reckon. I'll make a crazy guess and say there's 2500 XJR/6s on the road in the USA. The very nicest examples...and there are darn few of 'em... have a market value of of $5000-$6000. Average examples, maybe $4000.
And the fact is these engines seldom break and it takes a long, long time to wear 'em out. The rest of the car usually wear out before the engine!
What I'm leading up to, if you haven't guessed, is that you'll probably be sitting on this engine for quite some time, I'm sorry to say. I hope I'm wrong.
Good Luck,
DD

Yes, I think so.
Some will have been wrecked, naturally. Others worn out and abused beyond practical repair. "Reliable" isn't the same as "indestructable" :-)
Let's face it: most Jags don't get proper care to begin with. And then the market value drops so steeply that many owners are even less inclined to spend money servicing and repairing the car.
The ACV on my XJR, for example, is about $3900-$4200. As much as I love the car I'd have to think twice if any seriously expensive issues (like trans or engine failure) came along. In fact, I thinking about cancelling the "comp & collision" insurance coverage.
Cheers

The XJR uses and adaptor plate for the 4L80E transmission but I think it could just be removed to bolt up the ZF trans used in the regular XJ6
However.....
The supercharged engine has a much lower compression ratio than the regular engine (8.5-to-1 versus 10.0-to-1) so you'd lose a fair bit of horsepower
