You have 3 possible answers .....
1 ... The guy is talking rubbish.
2 ... I have heard of that happening before.
3 ... That really does happen.
So what is the situation that needs one of those responses?
It's when you get told by a mechanic that your car has an electrical problem due to it not having been run for a while. He goes on to say that the casing of your alternator (1995 XJ6 3.2 litre) has developed a crack when first used and that this has led to the internals getting out of sync and more or less falling apart.
Any answers appreciated.
Cheers,
Steve

Never seen it or heard of it before but weird things can happen. I don't see any reason that an alternator case would be immune from cracking. Other aluminum casings and castings are known to crack or break.
If the case IS cracked it could foul up the innards, yes.
Why not have a look for yourself, or ask him to show you?

I'm with Doug.
Alternators are regularly overtightened, and the Jag one is especially prone to that due to the threaded adjusting bolt, and bone head "mechanics".
This usually causes the bearings to fail before anything else.
I have seen alternators "innards" expand, due to over speeding (over revving), and when the innards contacts the outside bits, all hell breaks loose. Not a thing normally seen on a "standard" engine.
If an alternator mounting bolt/s are not secured correctly, the alternator can vibrate around, and that MAYBE could cause the casing to fail????. However on the AJ16, with its ribbed belt, would have that belt come off the pulleys constantly, so investigation would have to be done to simply drive the car.
SECOND OPINION NEEDED ME THINKS.

Thanks guys.
I would have asked to see the alternator, in a friendly sort of way, but the snag with that is that my alternator seems to be a bit different from most. Two alternators have been tried but neither are an exact match so mine was taken off and sent back to be refurbished. This was when the guy doing the refurb asked if the car had been standing for a while.
I'll maybe get her back in the next day or so and when I do, I'll take some pictures of the alternator and maybe you guys could tell me if it is a standard alternator or if a previous owner has stuck a strange one on there.
Cheers,
Steve
