Default '00 Vanden Plas - Fuel Guage/Sending Unit

Hello, looking for some advice - my fuel guage at some points in time will read on E when I know I have a full tank. Then I can drive it 3 hours later and all works fine. So it is like the guage is going on and off. I am thinking I need a new sending unit in the gas tank to correct this issue. With that being said, does anyone know how low I should get the tank on the gauge when it is working to ensure that when I pull out the sending unit, I do not get a rush of gas into my trunk.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Make sure you have less that 1/4 tank of fuel when you remove the sender.
