Default 01 XJ8 Coil Packs

Any way to test the coil packs? I have codes reading bad coil pack #4 and #7. I have removed the packs and checked the plugs. The plugs look new. I just purchased the car and i'm trying to check everything. I also have codes saying knock sensors and crankshaft position sensor, to name a few. I have read on the forum that the knock sensors could be a bad connection. If this is true, I will try to check the connections. I need help!!

Just a thought. These cars are known for voltage sensitivity in the ECU- Weak batteries are blamed for everthing from ABS modules faults (valid) to gas mileage (???), and some of these claims are probably valid. With your new alternator, I would reset the codes, then wait a few days before finishing your campaign, since Jag parts are pretty expensive.

The car is definitely missing at idle, but not under acceleration. Would you still wait for the alternator before going forward?

Changed the coil pack on cylinder 7. Reset codes. Waiting to see if I get another. Still have a miss at idle, so cylinder 4 may still be missing. I ordered another coil pack just in case. Just waiting for codes....

It sounds like you are on to it. It also sounds like the PO "deferred" a lot of repair. When you get these few s****lies worked out, you will most likely find you have a reliable, purring kitty.

"s****lies" ????
That is the most ridiculous censoring I have ever seen. I guess I should have spelled it s-n-i-g-g-l-i-e-s. PC run amuck.

Ok. Been driving for a day and no codes so far. Still have the miss. Also have another problem, possibly related to the battery problem I posted. The car does not start all the time. I have a new battery in it and yesterday it was fine. Today, no start condition. Appears to be a weak battery again because I am getting some messages about check rear lights and transmission fault. It did this when I had the old battery in it. Any ideas????
