Default 03 xj8 range error message

Gentlemen:
Well wife forgets to fill gas tank till almost out(no don't ask me how she didn't see gauge/light).
Here's the problem she put about half a tank in, starts car no read on gauge for ten seconds then needle jumps to correct reading then drops to E. When I check for range message now reads RANGE ERROR. Any ideas? I sure hope i don't have to change the sensor in the tank, is true you have to take out the gas tank?

Thanks

I'm not certain, but if you unbolt the two tie down straps behind the carpet, and rock the tank forwards, you might be able to knock the ring round and remove/install a new sender.

Default Fuel Tank R&I also Parts list - Diagrams & Photos

Hello
Update - AllData DIY gives this safety recommendation "Relieve the fuel system pressure prior to disconnecting fuel system components". Also here are 2 other threads that have posts on the fuel tank and fuel level sender:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...001-xjr-37754/
(look at post# 3 for TSB)

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...sonable-34983/

Our own experience: local Jaguar Dealership replaced the Fuel Pump and Lead link that was
inside our 2001 XJ8 Fuel Tank in April 2008. I am not sure if they removed the tank.

They charged 3.5 labor hours @ $100 per hour plus the cost of the parts and sales tax.
The 3rd Party warantee company paid for everthing except the lead link part of the bill.

I am not sure if changing the Fuel Tank Sender is a DIY job. There seems to be some
serious safety issues and cautions in the JTIS instructions about Fuel pressure procedures.

Well, I wanted to make sure that the Safety concerns were noted in this thread.

Here are a bunch of PDF files that will provide some of the information on the Fuel tank -
Diagrams/Photos/Instructions (first PDF file of Diagrams & Photos - page 1 has view of front of tank after
trunk lining is removed & shows the access to the sender near the bottom of tank):

Jaguar XJ8 Safety Instructions.pdf

Jaguar XJ8 Battery R&I.pdf

Jaguar XJ8 luggage front trim R&I.pdf

Jaguar XJ8 Drain Fuel Tank.pdf

Jaguar XJ8 Fuel Tank Level Sensor R&I.pdf

Maybe some of the forum experts will give some of their excellent advice on these procedures.

Sounds like the sending unit. No you do not have to drop the tank. It's about a 30 minute job. Just make sure the tank is less than a quarter full.
