1998 xj driveability problem on warmup

I am a newbie with a 98 and 01 xj8.
The 98 developed a hesitation/stall problem while warming up.
I had read online about the throttle body problems, but the symptoms did not quite match up.
As I experienced the problem I eventually noticed that the gauges went haywire at the time of the stall. Additionally the car would not restart until it had "warmed up" through a part of the temperature range.
I decided to "try" replacing the coolant temperature sensor (on the top of the engine adjacent to the upper radiator hose? been about 3 years, hard to rem while typing in side).
Never had that problem again
Never heard of anyone else having the problem either.
I assume that the sensor was shorting out to ground at a given temperature and disrupting the ecm until it was warmed up more.
