Hi marc,
Typically, when the cupholder won't close, one of the lower front hinges has broken. The hinges are made entirely of plastic and are underengineered for the task, so this is a very common problem. A lot of owners have repaired their hinges with metal reinforcements. Search this forum as well as the archives at the Jag-Lovers forum for details.
The repair kits that I've seen are grossly overpriced, so when I've had this problem I've just shopped for good salvaged arm rests on eBay and swapped over the cupholder mechanism into our leather coverings. It's a little bit of a puzzle, but with patience you can figure it out.
If your hinges are not broken, the other possibility is that the little plastic spring-loaded "tab" that locks the cupholder into position has worn and is no longer long enough to secure the cupholder. The spring-loaded release/latch mechanism can be adjusted a little more forward, but to access the screw that secures it in place, I think you have to remove the bottom plate of the arm rest. Also, when you move the latch forward, the leather where the latch previously rested will be permanently creased with the shape of the latch. If you don't have to move the latch much, this isn't usually a problem.
Cheers,
Don

had a similar problem with mine - the wrong colour one was fitted anyway so I removed the entire unit to re-colour it and repair .
You will have to remove the bottom plastic cover - little torx bolts as i recall.
The sprung loaded catch can be adjusted slightly - mine was too far gone so I grafted a small piece of rigid plastic onto the clip so it caught on the catch properly using 2 part epoxy. A botch by any other name but it did the job. This item is quite a complex piece of kit but a little on the delicate side.....

Found these youtube videos that should help you fix your cupholder.
This one shows how to remove & fix center console and cupholder:
This other one shows how to weld broken plastic hinges - info provided by forum member osyris (don't glue any broken plastic.
Get an electric soldering iron for electrical work, cost maybe $10 everywhere and anywhere. Then get some scrap plastic and plastic weld it all up see):
Link to another thread about repairing cupholder - has tsb on its repair with illustrations (see post#22):

I fiddled around with mine for quite a bit to make the catch engage properly.
Used to anny the hell out of me that merel resting your arms weight on the centre arme rest was enough to trigger it open....I fixed that sucker!! ;o)=)
