Hello All,
I decided to start a new thread to ask this question. I have a 1998 XJ8 that I was struggling with codes up until the other day when the motor blew up. I am looking at multiple options on what to do. One option is to find a wreck with a new motor and then i would have all the parts that should help with all the bugs that I was having.
So my question is what years are going to be compatible with the 1998. if you go out more years would the electronic not be as compatible but the long block would be compatible?
I should be able to swap up to a super charged motor if its a full car. That sounds like a fun upgrade.
Thanks for any input.

What do you mean the motor blew up? As in there is a big hole in the side and things that used to be inside are outside now?
Compatibility stretches a bit further if you already have the 'dead' motor and are knowledgeable enough to swap things over all the way down to a shortblock if necessary. I know people are hesitant on the supercharged engine swap but it's absolutely 100% doable and cheap - if you know how and are good at it, but if you were you wouldn't be asking the question so I agree with the others that its best to find an R car and go that route.
I've been building cars and engines for over 30 years, have made many forced induction cars, built my own standalone ECMs, can fabricate nearly anything, and I would (and have) done the same thing - get an XJR if you want a reliable and easy to use supercharged one.

I believe there is a hole in the valley pan, it seemed a likely place from where the smoke was coming from. Vs. where i could tell is was not coming from.
It started the next day, but knocked bad. Have not had time to mess with it since.
I have done a 4cly to 6cly swaps with the transmissions, harness, ecu, and turned wrenches for alot of years. The supercharger route is just more than i would want to do, i have other projects i want to work on as well.
So would rather start with nothing less than a long block. and prefer a totaled car.
but still pondering an 87ish totaled Vet. for swap
