1998 xj8 for sale

Looks like a good deal.
This photo shows its picnic table open in the rear seating area:
Here is weblink to some information on it based on its vin (SAJKX6245WC842218):
1998 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas VIN SAJKX6245WC842218 - Free Jaguar XJ VIN Decoder
If you are really interested in buying it, you need to know its repair and maintenance history, also any DTC codes flagged issues (like abs, trac, cruise, P codes,,etc).
A VDP model and is one of the top of line XJ models.

Jaguar/ newer
Low risk, potentially high reward. If nothing else, you could part it and scrap the carcass

What I am thinking that if I lived close enough to Riverside Calif, then I would be looking to buy that 1998 Jaguar VDP if it has records and receipts (showing maintenance and repairs done).
I would also have inspected before I buy to see if has any body repairs (past accidents) and other major repairs (such as timing chain tensioners, throttle body, ABS module, Security Control module, Brake Pedal switch, Instrument Cluster, broken wiring in Left hinge trunk area, Door check arms, little or no heat when you need it- clogged octopus hose unit and broken aux heater pump).
I wonder if I forgotten any other things that usually go wrong with the 1998 to 2003 XJ models.
Sounds like the Transmission has been rebuilt recently (another known issue with XJ X308 models) except the XJR.
You should also have a mechanic who has proper scanner to view DTC codes for all the Jaguar systems (Engine, ABS, Body, Security, etc).

Well, it sounds like that car was not in the condition needed to sell right now.
Knocking engine means that maybe the knock sensor needs replacement.
ABS & Stability probably means ABS module repair, or Wheel Speed Sensors needs cleaning or some thing else.
The car probably has a lot of issues that are unknown.

Plus he bought it at auction a year ago, parted out a 2000 to fix it and never transferred title into his name.
Humorous actually. Grateful it broke before I test drove it or bought it.

I am easy to tease, since I tend to be a literal person, but that just seems so silly!

The knocking sound was more likely a bad rod or crankshaft bearing. Knock sensors prevent preignition of the fuel mixture when lower octane fuel is used or engine is laboring at low speed. Preignition sounds like marbles bouncing inside engine. Failure of a knock sensor could certainly cause it, but bearing knock is more of a metallic sound, like hitting with a hammer.

Pardon me, but I speak knock and would be happy to translate: BOTH sounds are screaming "RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!!!" at potential used car buyers...that is, unless you've just had your existing same-model rear-ended but it has a sweet engine of like kind and you fancy doing the swap yourself.....

Sorry, I was joking a little, and yes the knock you hear could have been pre-ignition due to using low octane gas, or timing chain tensioners starting to fail, or ????.
There are 2 knock sensors on XJ X308 engine - look at this other thread (also see its post 22):
