Default 1998 XJ8 sunroof won't close

Hi, my '98 xj8 sunroof opens fully by holding the forward button down but when closing it it immediately goes to open vent position instead of stopping and sealing tight. When I press and release rear button, sunroof closes vent and immediately opens fully then stops. I've read reset/reprogram steps but either they are for other years or that is not the problem. Can anyone help me?
Thanks, Larry

Sounds like the sensor is either broken or calibrated wrong.

Remove the Dome light and you should be able to see on the right side a bix (black). This is the sensor. Remove it and set the sunroof to the closed position. Look into the sensor unit. There should be two plastic wheels visible. Line both up so a white dot is on both of them. When that has been done, fit again and try. Should work.

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to assist me. I did as suggested and lined up the dots, reconnected, but still same problem. Does this mean the sensor us defective and needs replaced.

Yep as it is the only part of the construction which determins the position and when it is closed.

Okay, thanks for your help. Any recommendations on where to buy one? I called local dealer and was told not available from manufacturer anymore.

Just in case you're interested in a used part.

That is not a normal problem with the sunroof .. the plastic clips snap causing all manner of issues when in vent .. and not keeping up with lubracation causes the module to properly reverse the roof ... but I can't say I have heard of the module failing?

If you determine that the module has failed -- finding the correct part on the used market would be the way I would go.
