Default regarding abs/tc light

....Just read that the traction control/ stability control lights are most likely due to a high brake fluid level after I replaced the brake pads on all four corners. That little bit of information might possibly exclude that minor issue from the overall diagnosis of the transmission blow up. We shall see.....

To tell if it is the differential, jack up and secure the car on jack stands, put the car in drive and see if the drive shaft spins and the rear wheel don't/hear grinding noise from diff.

A blown diff, can make you think the trans is shot, don't write it off, check it.

Had that exact same story happen to my belate BMW 740. The only way to confirm is do the above procedure.

I was in drive, going uphill when it let go and stopped going forward...
-p.s: The transmission was replaced 40k miles ago, June/2009. warrantee ran out @ 36k/3 years after replacement
Hey Kevin! I'm really sorry that this happened to you as well. You're reponse has made me feel better but then feel bad because you are in great need plus YOU are "a very good mechanic" that is unable to do anything right now.

I cannot believe this happened to you so soon after trans was replaced. Last night I was thinking...
I paid 4000 and now I may pay 4000 to fix so this could have been 8000 I could have invested in a new car.

I really like this jag, but not this $ much. I'm with sbreeden... your's could very well be the differential. I did not push my jag to the point of hearing grinding. I mostly heard the engine rev and then it would eventually jerk and then I would back off. I would see msg> gear fault and eng check.

Good luck to you... and to me!

You no wuss, you man'ed up to inform, not blame a friend of the situation. You never know what he might help you with.

The wuss would be, not to inform, but to assume. (A *** OUT OF U & ME).

I am following this thread, I would love to know the outcome when/if you decide to get it looked at/repaired.

+1 Steven.........I'm hoping for a good cheap fix.

Its one of those ones I'd love to see some forum members involved with the assist, but just looks like there's no one in that area that is capable unfortunately.

Stll tuning in..............

Morph, If you really don't want to tackle this trans repair yourself (assuming that there really is a trans problem after checking the other things) do some shopping around. This trans should be the ZF 5 speed (correct me here, guys)? It is nearly identical to units used in some other cars, ie BMW, etc. There should be several trans shops around that can make a repair to a ZF trans without it killing you. I know that our shop has used an excellent guy in New England; but he gets about $3500 for a reman trans. Digging around locally, we found a trans specialist that will build a Jag trans for half that; and that is a COMPLETE overhaul. You may be able to wheel and deal and find someone in your area who will simply make the needed repair... or overhaul it; whatever you want. I don't think I would go with a used trans. You may end up right back in the same boat before long. Removal isn't a bad job for any mechanic. It's straight-forward. No special tools. Do some looking. You just may be able to get out of this for a reasonable amount!

Thanks Chop! I'm getting brakes fixed on old 94 honda I've been driving tomorrow. I'll drive it until I can find a capable mechanic and one that i can afford. I can't find anyone but Mr. Transmission.

I want this done right with the reinforced A drum. I do not plan to go thru this again.

Update: $290 for brakes on honda. My water main broke last night waiting on city water techs to arrive. I couldn't sleep much last night from pain. Little over a week ago had a minor accident on motorcycle. Bike only has scratches on the tank. I think I have a fractured rib and there is nothing I could do but take aleve for it.

I'll be talking to a guy Monday about the jag. I'm ready to get the ball rolling on it.

Got it towed. Shop owner says it looks like A drum and will call me back with an idea what it will cost. I already know it will be around $4K. This will mean that in a matter of a few weeks I'm $8000 into a 14 yr old luxury car. What a sweet deal it would have been had this already been done along with all the other repairs. I jumped too quick due to friendship and respect.

I blame me!

I always learn from my mistakes. This one is a costly mistake that I could not afford to make.

The jag is a beautiful car. I needed reliable transportation and did not give a hoot about looks, cool value, power/speed, and etc.

The plus side... I've had a place to vent and cry. Not really!

Inside, it is so absurd that I'm actually laughing my head off. I'm not worried about it. Somehow, things will work out.

I hate this happened and don't wish it on anyone but such is life. I trudge on!

I wish I could have tackled this on my own. I'll let you know the damages....

Did meantion to the shop you think it is the A-Drum or did they find it on their own?

Alot of shop takes the customer word, so when they go in and replace it and it don't work, they can blame is on the customer.

Meaning more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$.

I spent a lot of time researching and a lot of time talking to the shop owner so he knows that I'm not going at this blindly. He will need to show me the drum being replaced and I advised him that he will need to order reinforced part. I gave him a link posted on this site for the drum. He said the valve body looks ok but sees what looks like a leak from differential. He said he does not work on them but will check the fluid level.

He is sending me a pic and I'll post it here for you guys. I asked which would be best, a rebuilt trans or replacing A drum. He said he warranties their work and not the part.

You think?

My friend picked us up at airport on Saturday. Spent the weekend with he and his wife and had a great time. Gave him a check. Drove it 800 miles home on Monday. By Tuesday night a week later, it was a garage trophy.

Absolutely!

My friend is upset over this. He said he wished he'd never offered to sell it to me. I told him not his fault because it is after all a 14 yr old used car. I knew the risk but I'm still an idiot. I did not consider the tranny or see any info about it or probably would have refused.

He hooked me because I knew how well it was maintained and saw the receipts on recent 4k work done on it.

Let me just say this to all the Jaguar fans out there... only collectors should own them. Not a vehicle for every day use like I was hoping it would be.

I am going to get it fixed, put it in my garage, drive it on weekends. I'll drive my 94 honda every day... as I have been doing.

Not true, I drive my 820 mile a week back and forth to work, not counting weekend outtings.

I do agree it is a used car, it could have happen to any car, Honda, Ford, Buick, Jaguar, that could have failed. You could have gotten it from the dealer and the samething could have happen. So, you are not a idiot.

I remember my father brought a BRAND new Caddy off the showroom floor and that same week the engine seized, somebody forgot to take the plastic off the oil strainer. two months later the electrical system shorted out, that car was always in the shop.

It just your season, thats all.

My season was two months ago, totalled the BMW, got a non lease renewal, insurance offered me a low ball offer for the BMW, and the insurance company car rental was ending on that Monday and I got the insurance check on Sat. I had no means of transportation to getting to work.

BUT, all in all I am in a better place now, kids are in a better school district, got a low mileage Jaguar XJR for 1/2 the price of the insurance retail value.

Everything happens for a reason and I mean EVERYTHING, some is obvious and some is not.

With the many of years you have on this earth, you should already know that. But, we all needs reminding every now and then. So, here is your reminder.

Best of luck and many well blessing.

LOL!

I was reading along and thought yeah this is good stuff until you got to the part....
"With the many of years you have on this earth you should already know that"
and I felt ancient. I'm 53 and venting again...

And I do agree that there is always a reason even if I can't see it.

I'm in whoa-is-me mode because it seems I am seeing more cash outflow lately than coming in.

Didn't you know 53 is the new 33, don't worry, I'm 10 years behind you. You only as old as you let yourself be.

The kids in my neighborhood always rally at my house, I have more joy than all the younger fathers. Sometimes my kids get jealous, they can't have me all to themselves.

I play basketball, football, tennis, soccer, you name it, I out run SOME of the younger kids.

No harm intended.
