1998 XJ8 Vanden Plas
I have recently been dealing with a "Restricted Performance" issue. It always happens when I start the engine after driving already and when I come to a complete stop. After I start moving again it usually goes away within 5 minutes. I have just recently received a Low Coolant Warning twice within the last 2 months but the coolant level was fine. Could these be related? I have read some of the posts on this subject but non seem to be like mine. I am going to check the air intake boot and the spark plug cover but I would also like some other suggestions if anyone has any.

Low coolant warning maybe:
The cooling level sensor in the cooling expansion tank might be operating properly (it should be floating to the level of fluid in the tank).
The coolant sensor float might be stuck at the bottom of the coolant expansion tank (reservoir tank). I had the same problem after I had the cooling system flushed and refilled with new coolant. The check engine light came on, also the low coolant warning message.
When I checked the coolant level and it was a little low. I filled the coolant reservoir tank to the top. But still was getting low coolant message. I called our mechanic and he said either the coolant sensor is stuck or it went bad.
I opened the cap of the reservior tank and stirred the coolant with an oversized round long handled plastic spoon. Apparently it must of moved the float of the sensor enough to unstick it, because the low coolant message went away and the check engine light is longer on.
Try it and see if it works for you also.

Hi! It has been a while since I've visited here.
I have this same problem and it is due to the coolant low level sensor needing to be replaced. $75. I'm thinking about getting it but not sure if it just snaps in place. Mine broke off. This actually goes under the area where you add coolant. Ridiculous price!

I don't know if Morpheus has solved his problem with the coolant level sensor, but, yes it does just snap in place. As a matter of fact, mine is cracked where the little tube meets the holder, but it's been like that for years and still works. It is a little tricky to get it under the tank and snapped in without damaging it.
