1998 XJ8 Vanden Plas hard boot fail
My problems began with the car being stuck in vallet mode. The trunk would'nt open at all. Not with console button, growler button or with the master key. I drilled a hole behind the license plate to access the trunk and was able to disengage the vallet mode. Now I can open the trunk with the master key but the console and growler buttons still don't work. All of a sudden the drivers window stopped working and the sunroof when opened would close by itself within seconds. With help from the forums I learned about the hard boot, touching the negative battery cable to the positive cable and that worked . The drivers window worked fine and the sunroof sunroof when opened stayed open. But within a day or two the drivers window and the sunroof both malfunctioned. I repeated the hard boot procedure and took care of the window /sunroof problem but again only for a day or two. Again I repeated the hard boot procedure and in a day or two the drivers window and the sunroof both malfunctioned. Please help me!!! I don't know what I did wrong. It's an ongoing problem. I looked at the right boot hinge wires and there were some exposed wires which I addressed. Both the console and growler buttons still don't work and the sunroof and drivers window still are acting up and

You basically have 2 problems. One the battery sounds as though it is failing. Have it load tested. You should have from 12.5 to 13.5 volts after sitting overnight. If not you will have the window problems.
The button and interior trunk release not working is most likely the result of broken wires in the trunk. If when facing into the trunk you look at the right hand hind you will find a plastic cover on the hing arm over a bundle of wires. They have a tendency to break internally from the open/close of the trunk. You will have to unwrap the bundle and then hook up a multi-meter and flex the wires to identify the broken ones.

Thanks to Samilcar and Avern1 for your prompt response to my dilemma. I will try your suggestions today and let you know what happens.
Also, need to know the proper procedure for reprogramming the key F. O. B. for my 98 VDP.
With much appreciation,
