1998 xj8/VDP crank but no start
My car was purring perfect up until yesterday afternoon. I drive it daily and have never had a single issue or cell luminate.
yesterday as I went to leave, I answered key, waited for system chsck to clear, then cranked my Car. No start. Tried again and it would crank but not start. The oil light, and battery light, and check engine light all came on.
overnight i put my battery on charge, for safe measures. Checked oil, and it was at level. It has ample fuel. Went to start this morning, and same thing. Slow crank - crank - crank but no start. It sounds as I ng it wants to start. It has spark, etc.

If you charged the battery overnight it should read when tested between 12.5 and 13.5 volts. I see that the stability control message is lit. The message and the slow cranking indicate the battery is no longer any good
Turn the key to on and wiat for 5 seconds and turn it off. The open the engine cover and on the forward end of the engine on the fuel rail is a schrader valve. Remove the plastic cap and with a rag to shield against the fuel press the center of the valve. If you have fuel coming out then the fuel pump is good. No fuel spurting equals bad fuel pump.
I really think the problem is a bad battery.

Replaced battery, etc.
kept on cranking, no start. Fuel pump is in working order, and still have spark.
heard this baby humming and realized the flap isnt opening during fire. Held it open with a small c-clamp and it started up. I think the electric motor for it is burnt out, or could it be a relay? Or something else...

That's the throttle body butterfly, and it should only be cracked open slightly when starting. I think you had bore wash from non start cranking and holding the butterfly open leaned out the fuel mixture.
I'm surprised it started with the air intake tube removed. Maybe the MAFS is faulty
