1998 XJ8 Water Pump install. (Torque value needed for .40 mm crush gasket)
Hello.
I am installing a new water pump in my mothers 1998 XJ8. I need the new torque setting for the .40 mm crush gasket.
Please note I am installing the (updated version) water pump with the new gasket, metal impeller and no plastic parts.
The updated water pump has a .40 mm 'crush' gasket and no o-ring.
As many of you may well know, the original equipment water pump had a 1.5 mm gasket with rubber inserts imbedded into the gasket. It also had an inferior plastic impeller and a plastic housing where 2 O-rings reside. Both of the latter result in the water pump failing prematurely.
Because I am installing this newer designed .40 mm crush gasket I need the new torque settings.
This is my second attempt to get a crush gasket to seal properly. During my first attempt I did not have the torque settings and thus did not torque the last crush gasket correctly and caused an improper seal and consequently a minor leak to develop. I have had to wait 3 weeks to complete this otherwise simple water pump replacement, due to shipping delays on receiving a replacement crush gasket.
I am quite confident that the torque settings provided in the JTIS 21 CD are for the old design of water pump. The torque setting of 8Nm + 90 degrees turn, is for the 1.5mm gasket with rubber inserts. That is not the correct torque range for the new crush gasket of .40mm
I realize I need to tighten the bolts in a star pattern.
Please help. I don't want to ruin another crush gasket and turn this into a month long project.
Thanks for your time reading the above and for the correct torque setting.
