1998 XJ8 Wheel bearings
I think i have a bad wheel front on the front right of my 98 XJ8, does anybody have experience in doing these bearings? are there any fact sheets or how to articles that anybody can point me too.
I have had a noise that has got progressivly worse over the last couple of months and today i had a vibration coming back through the car when driving at 50-70 mph which got worse when the wheel was turned slightly to the right.
Thanks

Removing the bearing requires a special tool to remove the ABS sensor. The lowest price I have seen is $150 for the tool.

Hi Chris,
This may give you an insight to the job, he removes the nut with an airgun! good old, old school

There is a large metric socket that fits the abs nut-32 mm?- I don't remember the size, but it works pretty good. The problem with the air chisel removal is that a preload is APPARENTLY set on installation and calculating the torgue with a chisel is problematic. The jag-lovers discussions never got into the preload, but there is plenty of chatter on the Ford explorer forums and it is exactly the same cartridge bearing. That's why you can find them for $40.00 or so. My biggest pain was cutting down a pipe coupling to use as the press tool to push the old one out.

Chris- Have you got AutoZone where you live? I believe thats where I got mne.
BTW, As I remeber there are two bearings per side, so the cost is about $75 - $80 per side. You really need to remove the "vertical link" and hub assembly from the car to do it right, although some claim to have done it on the car. Removing the bearing requires some sort of press and "pushing tools".
